Lightweight Fragment-Level Integrity Verification for CAN-Based OTA Using Micro-Hash Chains

Abstract

The Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates are crucial for today's vehicles for remote management and deployment of software components. However, commonly employed intravehicle communication interfaces such as the Controller Area Network (CAN) do not have built-in security features, including authentication and encryption, and thus, are susceptible to attacks from adversaries. In the case of the CAN-based OTA systems, firmware is fragmented because of the limitations of payload size. Fragmentation creates the attack vector for adversaries who could inject their own malicious fragments while maintaining the correct structure of the message, including offsets and checksums. Conventional integrity checks like the Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) cannot recognize such attacks. This paper proposes a lightweight fragment-level verification scheme relying on the micro-hash chain with the use of BLAKE2s-256 hashing and Ed25519 digital signatures. Such an approach allows progressive verification of integrity of firmware fragments as well as end-to-end authenticity. Evaluation of the proposed scheme with the use of hardware components - ESP32 nodes with the MCP2515 CAN controller - shows that the method is capable of recognizing attacks at the injection point with no overhead in computation.

A MODEL FOR INTEGRATED INTEGRITY VERIFICATION AND PERSONAL DATA RECOVERY IN CROSS-CHAIN BRIDGES BASED ON UMAC AND CODE-BASED CRYPTOGRAFIC CONSTRUCTIONS

An integrated model for integrity verification and personal data recovery during transmission across cross-chain bridges is proposed. The model combines UMAC-32, the internal UHASH-32 universal hashing mechanism, the McEliece cryptographic code construction, and a Niederreiter syndrome-based component into a unified ma...

Secure over-the-air firmware update mechanism for embedded IoT devices using lightweight cryptographic authentication

Securing over-the-air firmware updates for resource-constrained IoT devices remains challenging, as existing solutions either rely on memory-intensive cryptographic algorithms or provide only basic integrity checks. This study aims to address this gap by developing a resource-efficient yet cryptographically comprehensi...

Hardware-Bound Split-Key Framework for Software Protection Against Reverse Engineering

Software piracy and reverse engineering cause significant damage to intellectual property: the commercial value of unlicensed software installed worldwide has been estimated at over USD 46 billion. Traditional protection methods rely on static encryption keys or on obfuscation, and they are not resistant to modern anal...

Post-Quantum Authenticated Encryption on Networked Raspberry Pi Hardware: Security Analysis and Masking-Mechanism Ablation

Post-quantum migration for constrained IoT devices is usually assessed one primitive at a time, so little is known about how a complete protocol behaves once deployed. This study examines a post-quantum authenticated-encryption construction combining ML-KEM key establishment, curve-based masking, and ML-DSA or Falcon s...
