Abstract

Summary Climate change is intensifying water scarcity and amplifying upstream-downstream tensions in transboundary river basins, particularly in Central Asia. We present a multiscale framework integrating hydrological dynamics with the water-food-energy (WFE) nexus to assess climate-driven cross-sectoral trade-offs in Irtysh River Basin. By combining long-term hydroclimatic observations with climate projections, we quantified the effects of temperature and precipitation variability on runoff and evaluated how these changes propagate across interconnected WFE systems. Climate-induced hydrological changes increased irrigation demand, reduced hydropower potential, reshaped agricultural productivity, and intensified regional resource pressures, with distinct responses between upstream and downstream regions. These findings reveal pronounced spatial heterogeneity in climate vulnerability and adaptive capacity, highlighting the need for differentiated adaptation strategies and coordinated transboundary governance. Our study establishes a transferable framework for assessing climate change impacts across the WFE nexus, providing actionable insights for enhancing climate resilience and sustainable resource governance in transboundary river basins.

Climate change impacts on hydrology and socio-environmental exposure across the Amazon Basin

Climate change is altering hydrological regimes across the Amazon Basin, with implications for water security, freshwater ecosystems, and climate adaptation planning. This study analyzes projected multiannual and seasonal streamflow changes for 2015–2050 under SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5 using HydroBID, building on a previ...

Retention portfolios buffer climate impacts on floods, droughts, and water quality.

Climate change is intensifying floods, droughts, and nutrient export from agricultural landscapes, threatening water security under increasingly non-stationary hydroclimatic conditions. Although landscape-scale water-retention measures are widely promoted as nature-based solutions, their combined effectiveness under fu...

An integrated framework for assessing future river basin sustainability using a CMIP6 multi-model ensemble in Australia

Climate change is reshaping drought patterns across Australia, increasing pressure on water-resource security and highlighting the need for more informed and adaptive river-basin management. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of Australia’s future drought-related sustainability from 2031 to 2060 using a Qua...

From serial discontinuity to socio-ecological resilience: a conceptual framework for restoring river-floodplain connectivity in transboundary river basins under climate change

River ecosystem discontinuity and dysconnectivity are significant concern in transboundary river basins. Anthropogenic interventions, particularly infrastructure and hydropower development, have altered river ecosystems and disrupted river systems. Climate change has further intensified these forms of discontinuity and...

Quantified impact of projected climate change on groundwater recharge and river discharge leveraging the use of open access geospatial data

In previous years, water is abundant in the Padsan River Watershed, even in tropical climates. However, with increasing variability due to global warming, the watershed faces disruption of water resources. This requires thorough study, yet with fragmented data management, it becomes challenging. With technological adva...

Developing an integrated long-term environmental monitoring framework for assessing Nature-Based Solutions in the transboundary Mesta–Nestos River Basin: the Bulgarian demonstration site of the PRIMA NBS360 project

Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly recognised as an effective approach for restoring freshwater ecosystems and enhancing river basin resilience under intensified anthropogenic and climatic pressures. However, evaluating their effectiveness requires harmonised long-term ecological monitoring and sustainable a...
