The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is central to electrochemical water splitting and renewable hydrogen production. Here, we use DFT+U, continuum solvation, ab initio thermodynamics, and the computational hydrogen electrode to compare the intrinsic HER thermodynamics of Cu, Cu2O, and CuO surfaces with different crystallographic orientations under acidic and alkaline conditions. Metallic Cu provides hydrogen adsorption energies closer to thermoneutrality than the oxide surfaces, but it exhibits unfavorable water activation in alkaline media. Cu2O and CuO directly bind and activate *H2O, *H, and *OH at lattice Cu–O sites, yet their strong stabilization of hydrogen-containing intermediates penalizes H2 release. Thus, the overall activity ranking depends on the criterion considered: metallic Cu gives the lowest calculated thermodynamic overpotentials, whereas Cu2O, especially its stepped surface. Surface topology further modulates these trends through low-coordination sites. Importantly, we show that surface topology further modulates this balance, with low-coordination sites enhancing reactivity but amplifying adsorption asymmetries.
Understanding the dynamic restructuring of bimetallic catalysts under reaction conditions is key to improving their performance and stability. Here, we unveil the drastic changes in the structure and surface composition of copper-encapsulated NiO islands supported on Cu(100) during CO2 hydrogenation. Using in situ low-...

Efficient low-temperature hydrogenation of both heteroaromatic and benzenoid compounds using nonprecious metals remains challenging. Here, we report a nitrogen-doped carbon interfacial modification that creates a local hydrogen field (LHF) at the Ni/NC/HAP interface. In situ spectroscopy, kinetic isotope measurements...

Cu‐based catalysts on reducible oxides are promising for CO2 hydrogenation, but their activity and selectivity depend strongly on metal‐support interactions. Here, we investigate Cu/CeO2 and Cu/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalysts with Cu loadings between 3.5 and 10 wt.% to elucidate how support composition governs the balance betwe...

The alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is governed by the kinetic incompatibility between water dissociation and hydrogen adsorption. The conventional Pt-based catalysts are further limited by thermodynamic scaling relations that hinder the concurrent optimization of the Volmer and Tafel steps. Herein, we repor...

Methanol synthesis at Cu–ZrO2 interfaces requires CO2 activation, H2 dissociation, and conversion of oxygenated intermediates to proceed in concert, yet how Cu aggregation coordinates these functions remains unclear. Electronic-structure calculations, molecular dynamics, and catalytic experiments show that Cu size go...

Resolving the mechanistic link between local coordination environments and dynamic surface restructuring is essential for advancing carbon dioxide activation and hydrogenation on copper-based catalysts. Here, we demonstrate that the configuration of steps and terraces governs the restructuring pathways on high-index...
