Abstract
Introduction Physical activity, strength training, and sleep are important determinants of mental health. The authors of this study examined the associations of these lifestyle behaviors with emotional health outcomes among U.S. adults. Methods Authors conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2024 Health Information National Trends Survey® 7, a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults aged ≥18 years (N = 7278). Outcomes included depression (PHQ-2), anxiety (GAD-2), overall loneliness (PROMIS Social Isolation Short Form), social loneliness, and emotional loneliness. Predictors included moderate-intensity physical activity (≥150 min/week), strength training (≥2 days/week), and weekday and weekend sleep duration. Survey-weighted logistic and multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed, adjusting for sociodemographic and health-related covariates. Results Most respondents screened negative for depression (79.4%) and anxiety (78.4%), and 61.6% reported low loneliness. Most respondents did not meet the recommended levels of moderate-intensity physical activity (56.6%) or strength training (55.4%). In adjusted analyses, meeting strength-training guidelines was associated with lower odds of depression (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.53–0.95) and loneliness (aOR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.43–0.98). Moderate-intensity physical activity was not independently associated with emotional health outcomes. Obtaining the recommended 7–9 hours of weekend sleep was associated with lower odds of depression, anxiety, and loneliness, whereas obtaining the recommended weekday sleep duration was associated with lower social and emotional loneliness. Conclusions Strength training and adequate sleep were independently associated with better emotional health among U.S. adults. These findings support muscle-strengthening activities and healthy sleep habits as potential targets for mental health promotion.
In this online convenience sample of adults aged ≥50 years, sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, and total physical activity showed consistent cross-sectional associations and require confirmation in representative longitudinal studies.

PurposeTo examine the association between perceived social/emotional support (PSES) and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) among U.S. adults with self-reported cognitive disabilities, and to explore moderation by age and race.DesignCross-sectional analysis of 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data.SettingU.S., nationally representative telephone survey.Sample15 326 non-institutionalized adults with self-reported cognitive disability based on a BRFSS item.MeasuresPrimary exposure was self-reported PSES (good, medium, poor). Adjusted logistic regression models tested the moderating effects of age on association between PSES and LTPA, stratified by race/ethnicity.ResultsIn adjusted models, adults reporting poor vs good support had higher odds of physical inactivity (OR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.08-1.63). Significant moderation was observed: among Black adults aged 55-64, poor support was linked to more than 2-fold higher odds of inactivity (poor vs good: OR = 2.79, 95% CI: 1.24-6.32; medium vs good: OR = 2.07, 95% CI: 1.15-3.76); among White adults, associations persisted across multiple age groups.ConclusionHigher PSES was associated with greater LTPA among adults with cognitive disabilities, with variation by age and race. Interventions should integrate culturally tailored support strategies.

: Backgrounds: This study examined whether sleep duration may potentially mediate the association between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and mental health between in a nationally representative sample of U.S. high school students. Methods: Data from 15,671 U.S. high school students participating in the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) were analyzed. MVPA was measured as weekly days achieving at least 60 min of activity, and frequent poor mental health was defined as reporting poor mental health most of the time or always during the past 30 days. Sleep duration was evaluated as a mediator. Survey-weighted regression and Karlson–Holm–Breen mediation analyses were performed, adjusting for relevant sociodemographic and health-related covariates. Results: Each additional day of MVPA was associated with a 7.5% lower odds of frequent self-reported poor mental health (OR = 0.925, 95% CI: 0.898–0.954), while each additional hour of sleep was associated with a 29.0% lower odds (OR = 0.710, 95% CI: 0.668–0.756). KHB mediation analysis indicated that sleep duration emerged as a potential mediator of this association. The total association between MVPA and frequent poor mental health was β = − 0.048 (95% CI: − 0.072 to − 0.025), with an indirect effect through sleep duration of β = − 0.025 (95% CI: − 0.031 to − 0.019), accounting for 52.0% of the observed association. The proportion of the association accounted for by sleep duration was higher in females (55.68%) than in males (44.22%). Conclusions: More frequent achievement of the 60-min PA guideline was associated with lower odds of frequent poor mental health among U.S. high school students. Sleep duration accounted for approximately one-half of this observed association, supporting its potential role in the relationship between physical activity and mental health. Strategies that promote both regular physical activity and adequate sleep may help improve adolescent mental health.

BACKGROUND
Mental health represents a growing public health challenge, exacerbated by recent global and regional crises. This study aimed to identify sociodemographic, lifestyle, work- and health-related correlates of key mental health outcomes - primarily depression, insomnia, and job burnout - in a large sample of adult internet users in Poland.
METHODS
We analyzed pooled cross-sectional data from 1 196 102 adults participating in an annual web-based health survey in Poland between 2020 and 2024. Ordinal and binary logistic regression models (2021-2024 waves; N = 655 427) were used to assess associations between predictors (sociodemographics, lifestyle factors, chronic diseases, stress, social relationships, work characteristics) and self-reported mental health outcomes. Self-rated general health, neurological diseases, memory complaints, and frequent headaches were also assessed as secondary outcomes.
RESULTS
Significant gender disparities were observed, with women reporting higher odds of depression, insomnia, and job burnout (p < 0.001). Daily stress and infrequent social contact were the strongest correlates, markedly associated with increased odds of all adverse mental health outcomes (p < 0.001). The presence of chronic diseases (particularly arthritis and heart disease) and specific lifestyle factors (e.g., lack of physical activity and unhealthy dietary patterns) were also significantly associated factors. Conversely, regular physical activity and frequent social contact were protective.
CONCLUSIONS
Mental health outcomes among Polish adult internet users are strongly associated with a complex interplay of psychosocial, health, and lifestyle factors. High stress, poor social contact, and chronic illness burden are major correlates of poor mental health. These findings emphasize the need for targeted, broad-based public health interventions promoting stress management and social connection.

Background/Objectives: To examine the association between caffeine intake and mental health- and sleep-related outcomes, including anxiety, sleep duration, and perceived stress, in a nationally representative sample of Korean adults. Methods: We analyzed 20,504 participants from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2021–2024. Caffeine intake was categorized into six groups, and mental health- and sleep-related outcomes included clinically significant anxiety symptoms (GAD-7 ≥ 10), sleep duration, and perceived stress. Survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline analyses were used to evaluate associations between caffeine intake and mental health- and sleep-related outcomes, adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, dietary, and clinical factors. Results: The prevalence of clinically significant anxiety symptoms was 4.7%. Restricted cubic spline analyses demonstrated a non-linear association between caffeine intake and anxiety (p-overall = 0.010; p-nonlinear = 0.016). Higher caffeine intake was associated with progressively increasing odds of short sleep duration (<6 h/day), indicating a clear dose–response relationship (p-overall < 0.001; p-nonlinear < 0.001). Higher caffeine intake was also associated with increased perceived stress (p-overall = 0.025), although evidence for a nonlinear relationship was weaker (p-nonlinear = 0.062). These findings were generally consistent across multivariable-adjusted models. Conclusions: Caffeine intake is differentially associated with mental health- and sleep-related outcomes, with excessive intake related to adverse effects on sleep and stress.
