A Study on the Narrative and Communication Strategies of Lifestyle Slow Variety Shows: A Case Study of The One-in-a-Million Show

Abstract

In the context of an increasingly accelerated society, lifestyle slow variety shows have emerged as a significant cultural arena where young audiences seek emotional healing and identity construction through the aesthetic representation of everyday life and the provision of deep emotional companionship. This paper employs textual analysis, taking The One-in-a-Million Show as the primary research object, to systematically examine its narrative strategies across two key dimensions: line-quality narrative and micro-macro narrative structure. The study interprets how the program constructs character group portraits and emotional texts through a relaxed and deliberate narrative logic. Furthermore, it investigates the show's integrated media communication strategies at two levels—long-short dual-track communication and participatory co-creation—elaborating on the synergistic logic between long-form and short-form video content and the mechanisms of deep user participation. Through an in-depth analysis of narrative content, narrative methods, rhetorical techniques, and value transmission, this research provides both theoretical support and practical guidance for the sustainable development of slow variety shows. The findings suggest that future slow variety programs should continue to explore innovative narrative pathways to better address the spiritual and cultural needs of contemporary audiences, while simultaneously achieving an optimal balance between entertainment value and educational significance. This study contributes to the broader academic discourse on media representation, audience engagement, and the evolving landscape of contemporary television production in the digital era.
