Assessment of morpho-physiological variability and yield potential in diverse pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] germplasm across arid environments of Rajasthan

Abstract

Pearl millet is a critical staple crop in the arid and semi-arid tropics, yet systematic characterization of genetic variability among diverse germplasm under multi-environment conditions remains limited. This study assessed genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance and trait associations among 300 diverse pearl millet genotypes evaluated across three locations for two years at Jodhpur, Nagaur and Bikaner during the Kharif seasons of 2022 and 2023. Twelve morphological and physiological traits were evaluated. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant genotypic variation across all traits, confirming substantial genetic variability in the germplasm. Grain yield per plant exhibited high heritability (80.0%) with a genetic advance of 48.1%, supporting the feasibility of yield improvement. Correlation analysis revealed strong positive associations of grain yield with dry panicle weight (r=0.968), 1000-seed weight (r=0.992) and chlorophyll content (r=0.116), identifying these as reliable selection criteria. These findings collectively establish a robust empirical basis for multi-trait selection incorporating both morphological and physiological parameters to accelerate genetic gains in pearl millet improvement programmes targeting stress-prone arid environments.

Assessment of Genetic Variability and Character Association for Seed Yield and Its Contributing Traits in Urdbean [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper] Genotypes

The study assessed the magnitude of genetic variability and character association for seed yield and its contributing traits in urdbean (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) genotypes. Thirty-five genotypes of urdbean were evaluated in a Randomised Block Design with three replications, and observations were recorded for thirteen q...

Correlation and Path Analysis Studies in Restorer Lines of Pearl Millet [Pennisetum Glaucum (L.) R. Br.] During Summer Season

The seventy-seven restorer lines of pearl millet [Pennisetum Glaucum (L.) R. Br.] were evaluated for nine quantitative characters during summer season 2025 with a view to study the correlation and path analysis for grain yield and its yield contributing characters. The experiment was carried out in Randomized Block Des...

Assessment of Heritability and Correlation Analysis of Yield and Oil-Related Traits in Different Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) Genotypes

Genetic variability and reliable heritability estimates are prerequisites for effective selection in plant breeding. This study assessed heritability and trait correlations for yield and yield-related characters in ten safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) genotypes. The experiment was carried out during the Rabi season...

Multi-locus genome-wide association analysis of grain yield, plant height, panicle length, and flowering time in the Senegalese pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] germplasm

Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] is a staple cereal underpinning food and nutritional security across the semi-arid Sahel, yet locally calibrated genomic resources for its improvement in West Africa remain scarce. Improving its key agronomic traits is therefore a breeding priority, despite the crop’s inher...

Environment-specific selection of pearl millet genotypes by using an integrated MGIDI–WAASB framework across a global pearl millet diversity panel

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) is a key dryland staple crop suffering significant yield losses under heat and drought stress. Both marginal and productive ecologies of pearl millet cultivation require distinct ideotypes for breeding, whereas strong genotype × environment interactions and multiple correlated t...

Yield-associated trait analysis and candidate high-yielding germplasm selection among 49 Castanea mollissima germplasm accessions

Chinese chestnut ( Castanea mollissima ) is an economically important tree crop in China, but its relatively low and variable yield remains a major constraint on production improvement. In this study, 20 yield-related traits encompassing inflorescence, stem, and fruit attributes, including spiny cupule and nut ch...
