Interdisciplinarity in the self-translation of Cink (Tsing) by David Albahari

Abstract

This paper analyzes the specifics of self-translation through a case study of David Albahari' s novel Cink (1988) and its English version, Tsing (1997). The research focuses on the role of an interdisciplinary approach in addressing complex translation challenges, emphasizing the interplay between linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. The study operates on the hypothesis that the author-as-self-translator utilizes his unique position and dual competence to perform a creative recontextualization of the work. Consequently, selftranslation transcends mere substitution and becomes an autonomous act of "rewriting." Employing a comparative textual analysis between the source and target texts, the study draws upon translation studies frameworks, specifically foreignization and domestication strategies. The results indicate that a deep understanding of the cultural and historical context equips the self-translator with a superior capacity to formulate nuanced solutions that extend far beyond literal equivalence.
