Abstract

Within the framework of the circular economy, wastewater is increasingly perceived not as a waste stream, but as a strategic resource for pollution control and the recovery of valuable components. This review summarizes current approaches to wastewater utilization, highlighting microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as a promising technology that enables the combined treatment and power generation. Unlike traditional energy-intensive treatment methods, MFCs directly convert the chemical energy of organic pollutants into electrical current through the metabolic activity of electroactive microorganisms. This paper examines the main types of wastewater used as substrates for MFCs, including municipal, industrial, agricultural, and manure effluents. It is shown that municipal wastewater offers an accessible and predictable substrate; however, its low organic matter concentration limits the energy yield of the system. Industrial wastewater, on the other hand, has a higher energy potential but requires consideration of toxic and inhibitory components. It is concluded that the most realistic direction for the development of MFCs is their integration into hybrid resource-oriented cleaning systems that ensure the simultaneous removal of contaminants, energy recovery, and the return of valuable substances to economic circulation.
