Agentic retrieval workflows produce query, retrieval, and stopping traces as a byproduct of answering questions. We study how these traces can adapt a deployed dense retriever to changing workflow distributions without new relevance labels, synthetic queries, or LLM judgments. We introduce Navigation-Informed Embeddings (NIE), a family of trace-derived objectives. NIE-Stop turns the stopping document into a soft positive; NIE-Path additionally uses preceding path documents as hard comparisons and imposes ordinal constraints with geometric decay. A BGE encoder adapted from retained source trajectories improves support Recall@20 on an independent target benchmark from 72.2 to 78.0 overall. NIE-Stop reaches 76.9 overall and 52.3 on long paths; NIE-Path raises long-path performance to 55.4, compared with 46.7 for the unadapted encoder. A shuffled-order control under the full path objective loses 3.2 points. Without public-benchmark training, the same adapter also improves nDCG@10 by 1.9 points on standard BEIR HotpotQA. NIE therefore provides a lightweight adaptation channel for settings where trajectories are already retained, with zero incremental labeling cost.

In large-scale e-commerce retrieval, dual-encoder retrievers are op- timized for contrastive similarity, whereas downstream rerankers capture finer-grained relevance preferences; this objective mis- match limits end-to-end retrieval quality. Reinforcement Learning offers a way to use reward-model feedback for retriever adaptation, but we observe that standard policy-gradient updates can degrade embedding geometry, especially when the document index must remain frozen due to industrial constraints. To address this, we propose PAO (Positive-Advantage-Only), a selective RL optimization method. Our analysis reveals that in- discriminate penalization of negative samples (pushing away) in a frozen high-dimensional space disrupts pre-trained semantic man- ifolds. PAO selectively applies gradient updates only to retrieved items with positive advantages, effectively pulling query embed- dings toward high-reward regions while preserving global topo- logical stability. Experiments on both a massive industrial dataset and public benchmarks demonstrate that PAO significantly outper- forms standard RL and distillation baselines.

Knowledge-base construction and querying are typically optimized in isolation: retrieval-augmented agents operate over a fixed, externally maintained index, whereas construction receives no signal from downstream use. We present WikiLoop, a feedback-coupled framework that jointly learns to build and navigate an agent-native Wiki, a persistent linked-page knowledge base designed for machine navigation. A role-conditioned shared policy supports two interfaces: a Navigator retrieves evidence from the Wiki to answer queries, and a Builder proposes structured edits evaluated through downstream navigation. The Navigator follows a sufficiency-before-efficiency objective that applies retrieval-cost penalties only after full evidence has been collected. The Builder learns from utility differences: a frozen Navigator scores each candidate edit by its change in downstream performance, while a guard penalty discourages regressions on unrelated queries. Training combines sequential role-specific optimization with a final joint stage over role-homogeneous batches. With Qwen3.5-9B as the common backbone, WikiLoop reaches 62.6 aggregate Answer Correctness on AuthTrace, 6.3 points above LLM-Wiki, base, with the largest gains on multi-document queries. Controlled comparisons support the intended effects of both objectives, and the learned edits remain useful to a held-out Navigator. Paired comparisons indicate that the final shared policy largely retains both role-specific capabilities, improves Navigator and end-to-end Answer Correctness by 0.4 points relative to the corresponding specialist references, and consolidates both interfaces into one model. Without dataset-specific training, WikiLoop also improves over the same-backbone LLM-Wiki, base on HotpotQA and MuSiQue.

Flat retrieval-augmented generation treats a corpus as a bag of chunks, discarding document hierarchy and cross document structure. We introduce SearchWiki, a harness framework that synthesizes a corpus into a hierarchical, typed, navigable wiki and trains an agent, WikiResearcher-9B, to retrieve information through multi-turn tool use. The wiki organizes knowledge into three layers - document overviews, cross- document topic pages, and page-level source records; enabling progressive refinement of retrieval when initial lookup misses. We optimize the agent's navigation policy with on-policy reinforcement learning with a multi-component reward function balancing answer correctness, retrieval quality and trajectory efficiency. Evaluation on ViDoRe-V3 (8 domains), FinanceBench, and memory benchmarks (LoCoMo, LongMemEval, PersonaMem-v2) shows that WikiResearcher- 9B which is our RL-tuned Qwen 9B model, significantly outperforms same-size untrained baselines and exceeds or matches larger external models. SearchWiki paired with WikiResearcher-9B demonstrates that learned navigation over structured corpora is a superior alternative to flat retrieval.
