Abstract

The Middle Route Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD-MRP) is an important measure for alleviating water scarcity in central and northern China. To clarify the regulatory effects of inter-basin water transfer on reservoir droughts in both water intake and receiving regions, this study reconstructs a daily reservoir storage dataset for 1990-2024 using multi-source remote sensing data. A Remote Sensing-based High-Resolution Reservoir Drought Index (RS-HRDI) is developed to identify drought events, and copula functions are applied to examine drought characteristics, spatial heterogeneity, and the evolution of joint drought probabilities before and after project commissioning across the water intake (Danjiangkou Reservoir) and receiving sub-regions (a, b, and c). The results show that, after project commissioning, drought responses in the receiving regions are weaker than those in the water intake, and the frequency of drought events lasting longer than 15 days decreases. In addition, the joint drought probability declines from 2.83%-6.12% to 0.18%-0.51%, while the regional drought dependence structure shifts from the Clayton copula to the Gumbel copula. These changes suggest that the spatial propagation of drought signals is weakened after project commissioning and are consistent with a reduced risk of drought events lasting longer than 15 days in the receiving regions. Overall, these findings provide scientific support for drought risk management and the coordinated operation of inter-basin water transfer systems.

Deciphering Reservoir Storage Variability: A Multi-Reservoir Assessment of Hydroclimatic Drought Responses in Northwestern Türkiye

Climate change, rising water demand, and land use change are increasing the complexity of reservoir management. This study evaluates reservoir storage responses to hydroclimatic drought across 12 reservoirs in the Marmara, Susurluk, Meriç–Ergene, and Northern Aegean basins of northwestern Türkiye. Data from 27 meteorol...

Multi-source remote sensing-based monitoring of surface water storage in the Yangtze River middle and lower reaches

Ponds and small reservoirs are widely distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and provide important support for irrigation, rural water supply, ecological replenishment, and local drought mitigation. However, their storage dynamics are difficult to monitor because most facilities are small, sca...

Causal effects of the south-to-north water diversion project on groundwater restoration in Beijing

The South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP), China’s largest inter-basin water transfer scheme, has supplied Beijing with over 10 billion m3 since Central Route operations commenced in December 2014. This study exploits the 2014 commissioning as a policy discontinuity and applies a sharp Regression Discontinuity...

Climate Change Increases Water Scarcity Risks and Adaptation Needs in China

Increasing droughts are exacerbating the imbalance between water supply and demand, complicating efforts to secure reliable water and food supplies for key sectors. However, limited understanding of how water use responds to drought constrains effective risk management and climate adaptation. Using monthly water use an...

Multiscale Water Balance Analysis and Water Network Resilience Optimization in the Yellow River Basin.

As a core region for ecological security, food production, and energy supply in China, the hydrological cycle of the Yellow River Basin is being profoundly altered by climate change and intensive human activities, leading to growing systemic water scarcity and increasingly heterogeneous hydrological processes. However,...

Identifying Drivers and Projecting Scenarios for Blue Water Resources in the Upper Qingjiang River Basin

Blue water is fundamental to ecological security and socioeconomic development in mountainous headwater catchments. Taking the Upper Qingjiang River Basin—a key water conservation area of the Three Gorges Reservoir—as the study area, this study develops an integrated SWAT–Geographical Detector–system dynamics framework...
