Infrastructural Intelligence and Green Business

Oct 2026 · International Journal of Green Business · 0 citations · 27 references

Abstract

This article explores infrastructural intelligence as an emerging pathway for advancing Green Business and sustainable development by transforming conventional infrastructure into dynamic, predictive, adaptive, and resource-efficient systems. Building on the convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), edge computing, and predictive analytics, the article examines how intelligent infrastructure can support businesses in reducing resource consumption, improving operational efficiency, strengthening climate resilience, and developing sustainable solutions across sectors such as energy, water management, transportation, waste management, precision conservation, and resilient urban ecosystems. The article argues that the transition toward Green Business cannot depend solely on organizational practices or technological efficiency; it requires intelligent infrastructural systems capable of continuously sensing environmental conditions, interpreting data, anticipating risks, and adapting operations accordingly. At the same time, the environmental benefits of digitalisation must be weighed against its ecological footprint, including energy consumption, data-centre requirements, electronic waste, and material use. The article therefore proposes an integrated perspective in which technological intelligence, environmental sustainability, business responsibility, and ethical governance are mutually reinforcing. Particular attention is given to data sovereignty, algorithmic accountability, transparency, environmental justice, participatory design, and the digital divide, emphasizing that sustainable business transformation must remain socially inclusive and accountable. The article further highlights the importance of polycentric governance and stakeholder participation in ensuring that intelligent infrastructure contributes to long-term resilience rather than merely optimizing short-term economic performance. In short, the article conceptualises infrastructural intelligence as a strategic foundation for Green Business, enabling organizations and communities to move from reactive environmental management toward predictive, adaptive, circular, and responsible approaches to sustainable value creation.

The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.

What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us

Jennifer Neville did not want to go into computer science—but that’s exactly where she landed. Neville discusses the starts and stops that led to her professional sweet spot and her work identifying “surprising failures” making it hard for AI to handle complexity.  The post What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us appeared first on Microsoft Research.
