Issues with designing industrial concrete slabs on ground using modulus of subgrade reaction

Sep 2026 · Australian Geomechanics Journal · Vol 61, pp. 117-131 · 0 citations

Abstract

Modulus of subgrade reaction, also known as spring stiffness, is commonly referenced in engineering textbooks and routinely adopted by structural engineers in their slabs on ground design for industrial facilities (e.g., warehouse slabs). From a geotechnical perspective, the spring stiffness is not an intrinsic material property and has limitations when adopted in the design. On the other hand, Young’s Modulus (E) is a material property and should be used in the design as the basic tool. While various literature has shown the shortcomings of spring stiffness, the limitations of adopting a springs model as compared to the use of Young’s Modulus model, especially in the design of industrial slabs (i.e., large slabs on grade) have not been investigated. In this paper, the effect of loaded area to derive the equivalent spring value is first computed followed by an analysis case demonstrating that the results from analyses using uncoupled spring are unrealistic. Then, the resulting deflection and bending moment profiles of slabs obtained from a spring model and a Young’s Modulus model are investigated and compared. Uniformly and pattern loaded slabs are also investigated. The results from the studies show that the results from the two analyses (models) are very different depending on the springs configuration and could lead to inaccurate designs.

REPRESENTATIVE MODULUS OF SUBGRADE REACTION FOR STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF INDUSTRIAL FLOOR SLABS – A CALIBRATION-BASED APPROACH

<p>The Winkler model is the most widely used approach for the structural design of industrial floor slabs because of its simplicity and implementation in commercial software. However, selecting a representative modulus of subgrade reaction remains a major source of uncertainty. Conventional methods usually derive this...

Review on Comparative Analysis of Pre-Engineered Building (PEB)Versus Conventional Steel Structures

The PEB method is compared with the CSB method in this research through a quantitative analysis which considers the factors of structural performance, material consumption, and price. The main feature of PEBs is a factory-made structure that is engineered to use steel efficiently and also employs tapered members, modul...

Development of new design recommendations for structural steel joints under M‐N

In steel structures, most of the joints are typically subjected to shear (V) and/or bending (M) forces only, and their behaviour can be fully characterised using the component method as recommended in EN 1993‐1‐8. However, in some situations, these joints may also be exposed to axial (N) forces. Under such a loading co...

About design and testing of the load transfer zone on concrete in prestressed structures

Design the load transfer zone on concrete in prestressed structures is a time-consuming and nontrivial task. To confirm the design assumptions, it is necessary to conduct appropriate tests using kits of the prestressing systems. The authors have analyzed the new Russian national standard for prestressing systems and co...

Experimental investigation on the shear behaviour of a demountable steel plate connection applied for reusing existing slabs

Direct reuse of reinforced concrete (RC) components cut from existing buildings is considered to be an effective strategy to reduce large amount of natural resources consumption, CO2 emissions, and construction demolition waste. As essential components of RC structures, the volume of slabs accounts for a large proporti...

Mechanical safety assessment for reinforced concrete columns based on ultimate limit surfaces

It is proposed to assess the mechanical safety of key structural elements under accidental conditions using an ultimate limit surface formed by the joint consideration of local strength criteria for each type of ultimate internal force, without analyzing a single critical cross-section. Such a surface is constructed...
