Petrography and Geochemical Characteristics of Carbonatites and Associated Rocks in Southern Part Obu Opkela, Edo State

Abstract

Carbonatites are rare igneous rocks of mantle origin that are characteristically enriched in CaO and incompatible elements such as rare earth elements (REE), Sr, Ba, and Nb, and they represent important hosts for strategic and industrial minerals. Field mapping reveals that the carbonatites occur as discrete intrusive bodies emplaced within granitic and migmatitic basement rocks, with associated pegmatite veins. Petrographic analysis indicates that the carbonatites are dominantly calcitic, characterized by coarse-grained calcite with accessory apatite, pyrochlore, biotite, and minor sulphides, while textural evidence of secondary dolomitization reflects late-stage hydrothermal modification. The granitic host rocks display typical quartz–feldspar assemblages with evidence of deformation and alteration along structural zones. Geochemical data obtained from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis show very high CaO contents (up to ~95 wt.%), low SiO₂, and variable but generally low MgO, confirming the carbonatitic nature of the rocks. Trace element patterns reveal enrichment in REE, Sr, and Nb, with REE distributions largely controlled by apatite-rich zones, while Nb enrichment is localized and associated with pyrochlore-bearing domains. Primitive mantle normalized spider diagrams display enrichment of large-ion lithophile elements and depletion of high-field-strength elements such as Zr, Hf, and Ti, consistent with continental carbonatite systems affected by crustal interaction. The absence or low detection of MgO and heavy rare earth elements (HREE) in some samples is interpreted as reflecting primary calcitic carbonatite compositions and mineral-controlled elemental partitioning rather than analytical or sampling bias.

Petrographic and Geochemical Investigation of Dasht-e-Nawur Volcanic Rocks, Ghazni Province, Afghanistan

The Dasht-e-Nawur volcanic basin is one of the largest and best-known volcanic provinces in Afghanistan. This study investigates the petrographic characteristics, geochemical composition, and geotectonic setting of the volcanic rocks to clarify their magmatic evolution and tectonomagmatic origin. We systematically coll...

Geochemical and Sr–Nd Isotopic Characteristics of Porphyritic Basalts from the Sincik Area, Southeastern Türkiye: Insights into the Genesis and Tectonic Setting of the Middle Eocene Maden Complex

Porphyritic basalts exposed in the Sincik area of southeastern Türkiye form part of the Middle Eocene Maden Complex and provide an opportunity to characterise the geochemical and isotopic features of mafic magmatism along the Bitlis–Zagros Suture Zone. This study integrates petrographic observations, whole-rock major-...

Age and Petrogenesis of the Paleogene Rapakivi-Textured Granites from the Central Pamir, Tajikistan

Rapakivi granites are commonly interpreted as products of interaction between mantle-derived and crustal magmas, yet their origin in collisional orogens remains poorly understood. Here we investigate the petrogenesis and tectonic significance of the middle Eocene Jamak pluton in the Central Pamir using zircon U–Pb geoc...

Pyroclastic Rocks of Dharwar Craton: A Possible Source for Rare Metals and Rare Earth Elements?

Pyroclastic rocks constitute an important, yet comparatively understudied product of volcanism, which yield valuable insights into magma fragmentation, volatile behaviour and magma-water interaction during explosive eruptions. Owing to their glass-rich nature, high permeability and large surface area, pyroclastic roc...
