Abstract

Background: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) represent a significant occupational health issue among military personnel due to the physically demanding nature of their duties. Activities such as prolonged standing, lifting heavy loads, heavy physical training, and awkward postures place considerable stress on the musculoskeletal system, potentially leading to pain, disability, and reduced operational readiness. Despite these heavy physical demands, limited data are available regarding the prevalence and associated risk factors of MSDs among military personnel in the Patiala District. Aim: To determine the prevalence and risk factors of Musculoskeletal disorders among Military Servicemen in Patiala District. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 171 active military servicemen working in the Army Cantonment, Patiala. Data were collected using Self- Administered Questionnaire and Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ). Statistical analysis was executed via SPSS version 26. Results :The study revealed that the 12-month prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) was 76.1% among military servicemen, while 62.5% reported MSD-related problems during the previous 7 days. The lower back was the most commonly affected body region (23.8%), followed by the knee (20.0%), shoulder (15.3%), and neck (12.3%).  Musculoskeletal disorders are highly prevalent among military servicemen and are significantly influenced by a combination of occupational demands and lifestyle-related factors. Conclusion:Musculoskeletal Disorders are highly prevalent among Military Service Men and are associated with occupational demands and lifestyle-related factors. Preventive strategies, including ergonomic interventions and workplace health promotion programs, are recommended to reduce the burden of MSDs.
