Abstract
Porous copper fiber sintered felt (PCFSF) is a promising ribless flow field material for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). To improve its performance, it is essential to understand the preparation process and to optimize the porosity. After obtaining PCFSF with good properties, coupling it with a PEM water electrolysis system allows on-site hydrogen production and immediate use, forming a complete power generation chain. In this work, PCFSF samples with porosities ranging from 60% to 90% were prepared by low-temperature solid-state sintering. Fuel cell performance tests showed that the 70% porosity sample gave the best results. The reasons for performance degradation at excessively high porosity, namely reduced electrical conductivity and lower mechanical strength, were analyzed. On this basis, a PEM water electrolysis system was built, which delivered a stable hydrogen production rate of 400 mL/min at a constant current of 26 A. Capacity matching analysis based on Faraday’s law showed that this system can support a fuel cell to reach a theoretical limiting current density of about 2.16 A/cm2. Within the range of 0–2.16 A/cm2, a dynamic balance between hydrogen production and consumption can be achieved. This work covers the whole chain from material preparation to porosity optimization and system coupling, providing a reference for the practical application of porous metal bipolar plates and the integrated design of distributed hydrogen energy systems.
Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is a promising route for sustainable green hydrogen production. In AEMWE cells, the porous transport layer (PTL) is a key component ensuring media transport, mechanical stability and electrical contact. Currently, nickel felt is the standard PTL. In the present work, w...

Porous BaTiO3 (BTO) ceramics with controlled porosity were successfully fabricated using a simple and cost-effective sucrose-assisted processing route. Porosity was introduced by incorporating 10–50 vol% sucrose as a pore-forming agent, followed by sintering at 1350 °C for 2 h. The use of sucrose as an effective pore-f...

In this work, Porous copper foam samples were fabricated by a space-holder technique with water-atomized copper powder and sodium chloride (NaCl) particles in weight fractions ranging from 10 to 35 wt%. The powders were mechanically mixed at a 10:1 ball-to-powder ratio and 150 rpm for 2 h. The effects of space-holder c...

Thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries has created a growing demand for lightweight thermal-barrier materials that combine low thermal conductivity, flame retardancy, and mechanical stability. In this work, KH550-modified silicon carbide (SiC) was incorporated into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/nano-silica sol particle (...

Glass wool provides a lightweight fibrous framework with inherent thermal-insulation capability, yet its direct use in hydrophobic monolithic aerogels has received comparatively limited systematic investigation. Here, glass wool fiber (GWF)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aerogels were fabricated by freeze-drying followed by...
