Abstract

The concept of ukhuwah (brotherhood) is one of the fundamental teachings of Islam that serves as the basis for social solidarity and harmony. However, the development of contemporary society, characterized by identity plurality, social polarization, and digital communication transformation, requires a reinterpretation of the concept to maintain its relevance. This study aims to analyze the construction of the meaning of ukhuwah in QS. al-Ḥujurāt [49]:10, identify its transformation within the exegetical tradition, and recontextualize it through a socio-humanistic perspective. This research employs a qualitative library research method. Primary data were obtained from QS. al-Ḥujurāt [49]:10 and classical as well as contemporary Qur’anic exegeses, while secondary data were collected from books, journal articles, and related studies. Data were analyzed using descriptive-analytical methods through thematic interpretation (tafsīr mawḍū‘ī) and a socio-humanistic approach. The findings reveal that the concept of ukhuwah has evolved from a normative-theological paradigm to a socio-humanistic paradigm. Classical exegetes generally understood ukhuwah as a faith-based bond aimed at maintaining internal Muslim unity, whereas contemporary interpretations expand its meaning as an instrument of social cohesion capable of strengthening solidarity, social trust, and conflict resolution in plural societies. The study further demonstrates that the recontextualization of ukhuwah makes QS. al-Ḥujurāt [49]:10 relevant as a foundation for social ethics and communication in the digital era. Therefore, ukhuwah functions not only as a religious identity but also as a social paradigm that supports the creation of an inclusive, harmonious, and civilized society.

Reinterpreting qiwāmah in Qur’an 4:34: Integrating critical hermeneutics and maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah for gender justice

This study examines the interpretation of QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:34, particularly the concept of qiwāmah, and its implications for gender relations in Muslim societies. It seeks to address the tension between classical hierarchical interpretations and contemporary reformist interpretations oriented toward gender justice. Using a qualitative approach, this study integrates comparative exegetical analysis, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd’s critical hermeneutics, and Jasser Auda’s framework of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah. The analysis focuses on Tafsīr Ibn Kathir and Tafsīr al-Manār as representations of classical and reformist exegetical paradigms. The findings reveal a significant transformation in the interpretation of qiwāmah, from male authority and hierarchical leadership toward ethical responsibility and relational accountability. Similar shifts are also found in the reinterpretation of nushūz and ḍaraba, reflecting a stronger emphasis on justice, human dignity, and the prevention of harm. The hermeneutical analysis shows that both interpretations are shaped by their respective socio-historical contexts, while the maqāṣid-based evaluation indicates that neither paradigm fully satisfies the demands of contemporary gender justice. Based on these findings, this study reconstructs qiwāmah as an ethical-relational responsibility grounded in justice, human dignity, mutual accountability, and non-violence. The originality of this study lies in integrating comparative exegetical analysis, critical hermeneutics, and maqāṣid-based evaluation into a unified framework for reinterpreting qiwāmah and advancing gender justice in contemporary Islamic thought.

Etika Bermedia Sosial Dalam Perspektif Al-Qur'an: Analisis Tafsir Qs. Al-Hujurat Ayat 6, 11 Dan 12

The development of social media has brought significant changes to the communication patterns of modern society, but it has also generated various ethical issues, such as the spread of unverified information, hate speech, insults, prejudice, and the disclosure of personal matters in digital spaces. This study aims to analyze the concept of social media ethics from the perspective of the Qur’an through a tafsir study of QS. Al-Hujurat verses 6, 11, and 12. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method and a thematic interpretation (tafsir maudhu’i) approach. The research data were obtained from primary sources, including the Qur’an and classical as well as contemporary tafsir works, and secondary sources consisting of scholarly articles and relevant literature on Islamic communication ethics and digital literacy. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis techniques by identifying the ethical values contained in these verses and relating them to contemporary digital communication phenomena. The findings reveal that QS. Al-Hujurat verses 6, 11, and 12 establish a paradigm of social media ethics based on three main principles: information verification through the concept of tabayyun, respect for human dignity through the prohibition of insulting and degrading others, and social responsibility through controlling prejudice, tajassus, and ghibah. This study demonstrates that social media ethics from the Qur’anic perspective is not merely normative but can be developed as an Islamic digital literacy framework that integrates technological competence with moral and spiritual values. This study contributes to contemporary Qur’anic studies by offering a model of digital communication ethics based on Qur’anic principles that is relevant to the challenges of today’s information society.

RECONSTRUCTING THE LAW OF JILBAB IN THE QUR’AN

This article examines and reconstructs the legal understanding of the jilbab through a comparative approach between the interpretations of classical and contemporary Islamic scholars. Debates on the jilbab are not limited to the normative aspects of religious texts, but also reflect the dynamic relationship between religion, culture, and social change. This study employs a qualitative method with a normative–comparative approach by analyzing Qur'anic verses related to the hijab, particularly Q. al-Nūr [24]: 31 and Q. al-Aḥzāb [33]: 59, as well as the interpretations of classical exegetes such as al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Qurṭubī, and al-Suyūṭī. These interpretations are then compared with the views of contemporary Muslim thinkers, including Saʿīd al-ʿAshmāwī, Muhammad Syahrūr, Amina Wadud, Yusuf al-Qaraḍāwī, and M. Quraish Shihab. The findings indicate a paradigmatic shift in interpretation from a textual–normative approach that emphasizes the formal obligation of the hijab toward a contextual and teleological approach oriented to the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah), such as the protection of dignity, modesty, and social justice. The reconstruction of hijab law proposed in this article underscores the importance of distinguishing between universal normative Islamic values and the practical forms of the jilbab, which are historical and contextual in nature. This distinction has particular relevance in a Muslim-majority country such as Indonesia, where debates over religious dress intersect with questions of religious diversity and legal formalization. This study is expected to contribute to the development of contemporary Islamic legal discourse that is more adaptive, humanistic, and responsive to social realities.

Transformasi Pemahaman Al-Qur’an: Sejarah, I’jaz, dan Dinamika Model Tafsir dalam Studi Islam Kontemporer

This study is motivated by the importance of understanding the Qur’an as a holy book possessing various aspects of inimitability, including its linguistic, structural, and thematic contents. This study aims to examine the miraculous aspects of the Qur’an, particularly from the perspective of its numerical features and authenticity, as well as to analyze the themes of monotheism (tawhid), law, and social issues as broad objects of exegesis (tafsir). The method employed is qualitative research utilizing a library research approach, conducted through the analysis of relevant exegesis literature and scholarly sources. The results indicate that the Qur’an possesses a unique structural balance and thematic consistency that demonstrate the perfection of divine revelation. The examined religious and social themes are also universal and highly relevant to contemporary life. The implication of this study emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive understanding of the Qur’an, encompassing not only textual aspects but also its context and structure, to strengthen faith and broaden Islamic scholarly insight.

Hermeneutika Terminologis: Studi Analisis Pemikiran Asy-Syahid Al-Busyaikhi Tentang Feminisme Al-Qur’an

This research discusses the discourse of gender and the Qur’an. The discourse on gender has been promoted by academics as a continuing effect of the normative interpretation of the Qur’an during the classical era, which seemingly positioned women at a lower level than men. One of the figures who emerged in response to the normative readings of the classical period is Asy-Syahid Al-Busyaikhi. This study aims to uncover the hermeneutical approach and feminist perspectives on the Qur’an proposed by Asy-Syahid Al-Busyaikhi. Through a holistic and structural reading of the sacred text, this study finds that Al-Busyaikhi successfully deconstructs the hierarchy of gender dominance without relying on western sociological frameworks. He demonstrates that the ontological construction of male and female relations is bound by the principles of istikhlāf (shared vicegerency) and takāmul (complementarity). This article concludes that Al-Busyaikhi's methodology offers a highly authentic emancipatory path for the effort to uphold gender justice within the Islamic scholarly tradition.

Pendekatan Hermeneutika dalam Menafsirkan Al-Qur’an: Telaah Metodologis atas Makna Teks dan Konteks

This study aims to analyze the hermeneutical approach in interpreting the Qur’an through a methodological examination of textual meaning and context. This study is motivated by the need to develop contemporary Qur’anic interpretation that can respond to modern issues while maintaining the authority of revelation and the principles of Islamic scholarship. This research uses a qualitative approach with library research as its design. Data were collected through documentation studies of academic literature on hermeneutics, Qur’anic interpretation, contextual interpretation, and interpretive methodology. The data were analyzed using content analysis and hermeneutical analysis. The findings show that hermeneutics can help interpreters understand the relationship between text, historical context, and reader. Hermeneutics also provides opportunities for developing Qur’anic interpretation that is more critical, contextual, and responsive to contemporary issues. However, its use must be limited by the principles of ulum al-Qur’an, Arabic language, asbab al-nuzul, munasabah of verses, hadith, and the authority of revelation. This study concludes that hermeneutics can enrich the methodology of Qur’anic interpretation when positioned as an analytical tool, not as a replacement for tafsir science.
