Abstract

Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) instruction plays a strategic role in introducing the Indonesian language and culture to the international community. However, beginner-level BIPA instruction still faces challenges, particularly the limited availability of learning media that are interactive, contextual, and grounded in local culture. Preliminary observations and interviews with BIPA instructors at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara revealed that the use of digital media in BIPA instruction remains limited and has not fully integrated the local wisdom of North Sumatra. This study aims to develop a Flipbook incorporating the local wisdom of North Sumatra as an alternative teaching material that is interactive, communicative, and contextual for beginner-level BIPA students, as well as to examine its feasibility and effectiveness. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The Analysis stage was conducted through observation, interviews, and learning needs analysis; the Design stage involved designing the materials, media structure, and integration of local wisdom elements; the Development stage encompassed product development, validation, and revision; the Implementation stage involved trialing the media with beginner-level BIPA students; and the Evaluation stage assessed the feasibility and effectiveness of the media based on the trial results. The findings indicate that product validation by media/instructional technology experts, language experts, and material experts yielded percentages of 87.5%, 93.8%, and 95.8%, respectively, all falling into the "highly feasible" category. The student trial showed a positive response with an average score of 87% (highly feasible category), while pretest–posttest analysis demonstrated the media's effectiveness with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.790 and a coefficient of determination of R² = 0.624. These findings confirm that the Flipbook incorporating the local wisdom of North Sumatra is both feasible and effective for use in beginner-level BIPA instruction, contributing not only to the improvement of students' language proficiency but also to the introduction of Indonesian local culture to international learners.
