Managing in the Age of AI : Understanding Responsibility Perceptions and Changes in Ability Requirements
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming organizational work and professional roles, creating new opportunities while challenging established notions of responsibility. This cumulative dissertation examines how professionals perceive and assume responsibility when working with AI, how their ability requirements evolve with increasing AI use, and which organizational conditions enable them to navigate its unintended consequences. Across ten theoretical and empirical papers, it provides insights into responsibility attribution, shifts in professional responsibilities, the changing abilities required for human–AI collaboration, and the role of AI literacy and organizational support. In doing so, the dissertation advances a responsibility-oriented perspective on human–AI collaboration and demonstrates how individuals and organizations can leverage AI’s potential without losing sight of the human responsibility its use entails.
