Distinct patterns in study techniques and intrinsic challenges in nursing students' self-directed learning: an exploratory, comparative qualitative study.
The results underscore the need for nurse educators and institutions to recognize and address the intrinsic factors when designing learning environments and support strategies, in order to better facilitate effective self-directed learning in foundational subjects in nursing.
Abstract
Background
Self-directed learning supports nursing students' professional development by enabling them to deepen their theoretical knowledge, particularly in complex foundational subjects such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. Becoming a self-directed learner is therefore crucial for academic success and continued professional growth. However, intrinsic (student-related) factors can challenge students' efforts to engage in effective self-directed learning, especially in these demanding subjects. Despite this, little is known about which intrinsic factors first-year nursing students perceive as hindering their self-directed learning in biosciences, and whether these differ between younger and mature students. Understanding these intrinsic factors in detail is thus essential for nurse educators who support nursing students' learning in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. The aim of the study was to explore and compare intrinsic factors that challenge young and mature nursing students' engagement in self-directed learning of anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry.
Methods
An exploratory qualitative design was employed. Written responses from 98 first-year nursing students were collected in November 2024. Each response was approximately 150 words in length. The students answered an open-ended question about contextual and intrinsic factors hindering self-directed learning in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, submitted via the university's digital learning platform. The responses were analysed using qualitative content analysis, with a comparative component between two age-defined groups (younger and mature students).
Results
Four categories of intrinsic factors that challenge first-year nursing students' self-directed learning in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry were identified: (1) Challenges with effective study techniques in self-directed learning, (2) Challenges with motivation in self-directed learning, (3) Health-related constraints on self-directed learning, and (4) Procrastination in self-directed learning.
Conclusions
The results revealed intrinsic factors that challenged self-directed learning in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry among nursing students. Student-Centered Learning (SCL) has become an important instructional approach in nursing education because it encourages students to actively construct knowledge, strengthen critical thinking, and improve problem-solving abilities. Despite its educational benefits, nursing students frequently encounter various challenges that may limit the effectiveness of SCL implementation. These challenges are influenced by multiple factors, including individual characteristics, learning environments, institutional support, teaching strategies, and the availability of educational resources. This study aims to identify and describe the distribution of factors affecting nursing students’ challenges in Student-Centered Learning. A quantitative descriptive design was employed to examine the prevalence and distribution of these influencing factors among nursing students. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive statistical methods, including frequency and percentage distributions. The findings indicate that challenges experienced by nursing students are multidimensional, with the most prominent factors relating to learning readiness, time management, academic workload, lecturer facilitation, learning resources, and peer collaboration. The results suggest that successful implementation of Student-Centered Learning requires not only students’ active engagement but also adequate institutional support, effective instructional design, and a conducive learning environment. Understanding the distribution of these influencing factors provides valuable evidence for educators and higher education institutions to develop targeted strategies that enhance students’ learning experiences and improve the effectiveness of Student-Centered Learning in nursing education.

This exploratory qualitative study aimed to explore nursing students' experiences and perspectives regarding collaborative technology-based assignments included in the "technology use in nursing" course, as well as their perceived contributions to personal and academic development.
BACKGROUND
Writing is integral to nursing education and the nursing profession, but scholarly writing produced by graduate nursing students is often viewed through a deficit lens.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to capture and describe doctor of nursing practice students' perceptions of their writing strengths and challenges, and to learn from reflections on a writing assignment, to inform graduate faculty and their pedagogy, helping them better understand their student population.
METHODOLOGY
This study used a qualitative, descriptive approach to review 205 student reflections on writing strengths, challenges, and learning to understand their perspectives on scholarly writing.
RESULTS
Varied foundational levels of writing and other academic skills, previous experience, orientations, and attitudes that students bring to writing emerged in these student reflections. Responses were categorized into identity, attitude, resources, style, process, and mechanics.
CONCLUSIONS
Students expressed resilience, dedication, self-awareness, self-doubt, and uncertainty. Support resources helped students gain confidence and experience.
IMPLICATIONS
We should acknowledge the existing skills and resources on which students can build and grow as graduate scholars and writers. We should also not assume that all nurses or graduate nursing students write in an academic or scholarly manner before entering programs; one of the values of this assignment was that it required students to access specialized, writing-specific support. Scaffolding collaboration with existing academic supports, such as writing centers and library resources, can help students identify their strengths and spur development as graduate-level writers.
