Abstract

ABSTRACT Evaluating the response of pile foundations subjected to lateral loads induced by wind, waves, or seismic actions remains a challenging problem in geotechnical engineering. In this study, the pipe pile and the surrounding soil are modelled as an axisymmetric body subjected to non-axisymmetric loading. A semi-analytical finite element formulation is employed to compute nodal displacements, strains, and stresses throughout the discretised medium. The developed computer code was first validated for a solid cross-section pile by comparison with rigorous analytical and numerical solutions available in the literature. The accuracy of the interface element formulation was then evaluated by comparing the stresses at the pile-soil interface with those obtained at the boundaries of adjacent soil elements. Following this successful validation, the influence of interface roughness and smoothness on the radial distribution of selected stress components at a given depth was investigated for three soil stiffness profiles under the two loading cases.

Kinematics of single end-bearing piles in partially treated soil subjected to vertically incident P-waves

An analytical model is proposed to investigate the kinematic response of a single endbearing pile in partially treated soil under vertical P-waves. Region-matching method is adopted to divide the physical domain of the soil-pile system into three parts. The total vertical displacement of the system is assumed to be the...

Behavior of Composite Piles Subjected to Combined Loads: Numerical Analysis

Piles are one-dimensional (1D) beam–column elements designed to support axial loads from superstructures. However, in tall buildings, ports, bridges, and both onshore and offshore structures, they are subjected to combined loads that include axial forces, lateral loads, and bending moments. The study of pile behavior u...

Seismic response of end-bearing piles in saturated cross-anisotropic soil subjected to vertically-incident P-waves

Due to natural sedimentary consolidation processes or the directional arrangement of soil particles, foundation soils often exhibit cross-anisotropic characteristics. To investigate the coupled dynamic behavior of a pile-soil system in saturated cross-anisotropic soil under vertical seismic P-waves, this study establis...

Axially Loaded End-Bearing Pile Foundations: Analytical Formulation Incorporating Soil Nonhomogeneity

This paper demonstrates a new analytical formulation for axially loaded end-bearing pile foundations embedded in a nonhomogeneous soil deposit. The nonhomogeneity in the analysis is introduced through an analytical expression that describes parabolic, linear, and hyperbolic variations of the shear modulus with depth....

Seismic Performance of Point-Bearing Piles in Liquefiable Soils: A Finite Element-Based Parametric Study

Liquefaction is one of the most important and complex topics in geotechnical earthquake engineering. Large soil deformations can develop therefore damages can occur during and after soil liquefaction. Pile foundations are commonly used among the deep foundations and are projected as point bearing pile or friction pile....

Analytical Solution for Tension Piles Supporting Large Civil Infrastructures in Three-Layered Soil

Pile foundations transmit structural loads to deeper subsoil strata whenever the soil in the vicinity of the ground surface lacks sufficient strength and stiffness to ensure an adequate factor of safety against ultimate failure or warrant settlements to remain below acceptable limits. In many in situ conditions, piles...
