Decoding Adaptation Finance Research Dynamics: A Comprehensive Tri‐Methodological Review and Research Agenda

Abstract

With time, adaptation finance (AF) has become an essential instrument for achieving the objective of capacity building and safeguarding vulnerable nations from the damaging effects of climate change. While global dialogue has focused on mitigation strategies, growing recognition of the irreversibility of certain climate impacts has intensified attention on how societies can be financially equipped to adapt to a changing climate. In this context, the AF domain is experiencing increased interest from both practitioners and academics; however, there is a lack of comprehensive studies mapping this area of knowledge. The present research addresses this gap by utilizing three methodological approaches to map the intellectual and social framework of the AF field. A scientometric analysis was conducted using CiteSpace software to create networks of authors, countries, keywords, and institutions involved in AF publications, highlighting the predominance of contributions from developed nations, with limited research participation from developing countries. Second, cluster analysis was performed using Python, employing TF‐IDF matrix and K‐means clustering yielding seven distinct clusters: Climate Adaptation Funding and Policy, Private Sector Engagement, Economic Impacts, Global Initiatives and Policies, Adaptation Coordination and Implementation, Risk Management, and Local Community‐Based Initiatives. Third, content analysis of 62 recent studies, combined with scientometric and clustering techniques, was conducted to identify promising future research directions. Implications for various stakeholders are discussed.

Beyond mitigation agendas: climate adaptation, institutional responses and resilience in higher education institutions facing extreme climate events

This study aims to examine how higher education institutions (HEIs) adapt and respond to extreme climate events and identify the climate resilience approaches reported in the literature. A systematic literature review following the Knowledge Development Process–Constructivist (ProKnow-C) protocol was conducted using the Scopus and Web of Science databases. After applying eligibility criteria, 34 articles were selected and analyzed through descriptive and systemic approaches. Institutional responses are heterogeneous. Reactive and incremental approaches predominate, whereas planned and collaborative strategies are associated with stronger adaptive capacity. Climate resilience is conceptualized as an institutional process, a measurable performance outcome or an infrastructural attribute. The review was limited to the portfolio selection phase of the ProKnow-C protocol and reflects a predominance of studies from Global North contexts. The findings support the strengthening of institutional planning, climate governance and risk-informed decision-making in HEIs. The proposed framework can assist institutional managers in assessing preparedness, identifying vulnerabilities, developing more coherent adaptation strategies and integrating climate risk into institutional planning. By supporting more structured institutional responses, the study contributes to reducing vulnerabilities, strengthening territorial resilience and reinforcing the social role of HEIs as actors that support communities facing increasing climate risks and extreme events. This study integrates dispersed evidence on climate adaptation, institutional responses and resilience in HEIs and proposes a conceptual framework linking climate risk, governance, adaptation responses, adaptive capacity and institutional learning. By connecting these dimensions, it provides a structured analytical model for understanding resilience-building processes in higher education and for examining how governance and learning shape adaptation trajectories over time.

Assessing the socioeconomic impact of climate vulnerability on regional innovation: role of institutional quality in top 10 innovative countries

Rapid climate change has posed significant challenges globally, impacting various facets of socioeconomic development. Understanding the intersection of climate vulnerability (CVN), institutional quality (INQ) and innovation performance is crucial, especially within highly innovative nations. This study aims to investigate the relationship between CVN, INQ and innovation performance. The empirical analysis was conducted across the top ten innovative countries and by considering a wide range of data over the period 1995–2021. For regression analysis, the authors use fully modified ordinary least squares and dynamic ordinary least squares models. The study uncovers a negative impact of CVN on innovation performance and a positive association between INQ and innovation. Notably, INQ moderates the relationship between CVN and innovation. The study emphasizes strategic policies that fortify institutions, promote climate-resilient innovation and integrate innovative practices into climate adaptation strategies, propelling nations toward resilient and innovative development paths. The analysis highlights the need for institutional strengthening and innovation-centric climate policies. Robust institutions play a pivotal role in fostering innovation amidst climate challenges. The study’s novelty lies in its holistic analysis of CVN, INQ and innovation within top innovative countries, uncovering the moderating effect of INQ on the climate–innovation nexus.

From adaptation to overload: how climate risks affect public health?—evidence from China

Climate risks (CR), particularly extreme climatic events, are systematically threatening global public health (PH). However, most of the existing studies focus on the linear relationship between a single climate factor and health outcomes, lack in-depth investigation of the nonlinear relationship between the two, and pay little attention to the multi-dimensional adjustment of socio-economic factors. This paper collects panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2011 to 2023, uses ArcGIS and the quantile method to visualize the spatial and temporal evolution pattern of provincial CR and PH. By constructing a province-year fixed effect model with a square term and a moderating effect model, the nonlinear relationship between the two is systematically explored, and the moderating mechanism and heterogeneity of different social factors are identified. The results show that the response of PH to CR is first actively adapted and then significantly inhibited, showing a significant inverted U-shaped relationship. Digital inclusive finance (DIF) and residents’ income level (RI) make the inverted U-shaped curve steeper and push the inflection point to the right, showing the characteristics of efficiency-enhanced adjustment; the energy structure optimization (ESO) makes the curve more gentle and the inflection point move to the left, which is manifested as risk-releasing regulation. According to heterogeneity analysis, environmental regulations intensity and green spaces construction have mitigated the health impacts of CR through buffering effects, while green technological innovation has contributed to the manifestation of the inverted U-shaped relationship. This study confirms the existence of an adaptive threshold in the climate-health system resilience, and elucidates three distinct moderating pathways—financial resilience, economic resources, and energy infrastructure—each operating through different mechanisms.
