ChatGPT, ally or enemy? Personal appraisal, beliefs, challenges, and applications in higher education: a mixed-method approach

Abstract

Abstract This study analyzes personal appraisal, beliefs, challenges, concerns, and applications regarding ChatGPT among students and academic staff from the Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences at Andrés Bello University in Chile. Using a mixed-methods approach, surveys (n = 472) and focus groups revealed diverse attitudes toward ChatGPT. While participants highlighted its potential to enhance learning, streamline tasks, and create educational materials, important challenges related to ethical use, dependency, accuracy, and critical thinking emerged. Findings emphasize the importance of teacher training, ethical guidelines, and strategies to foster technological literacy and critical evaluation of information. The study underscores the need for balanced integration of ChatGPT as a complementary tool in higher education, ensuring that its use aligns with pedagogical objectives and promotes meaningful learning experiences. These insights contribute to the growing discourse on artificial intelligence (AI) in education, providing a foundation for future research on the responsible adoption of AI technologies.

ChatGPT in education: a systematic literature review of pedagogical applications, benefits, challenges, and future directions

Purpose: to systematically review the existing literature on the use of ChatGPT in education by examining its pedagogical applications, educational benefits, ethical challenges, and future research directions. Method: this study used a systematic literature review (SLR) based on PRISMA guidelines. A total of 25 articles published between 2023 and 2026 were analyzed to identify the applications, benefits, challenges, and future directions of ChatGPT in education. Findings: ChatGPT supports education through personalized learning, tutoring, feedback, teaching assistance, and research support. However, challenges remain regarding academic integrity, information accuracy, privacy, and ethical implementation. Future research should focus on effective and responsible AI integration in education. Implications: this study highlights the importance of integrating ChatGPT in education through evidence-based pedagogical strategies, AI literacy development, and ethical governance to maximize its benefits while minimizing potential risks. Originality: this study provides an original synthesis of recent research on ChatGPT in education by identifying emerging applications, pedagogical benefits, ethical challenges, and future research directions through a systematic review framework.

Tools facilitate cheating, or partner supports learning? GenAI and academic integrity issues from students’ perspectives

The rapid expansion of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has increased concerns about academic integrity in higher education, reshaping the way it was previously conceptualized. As GenAI becomes more prevalent, an in-depth understanding of students’ perspectives appears to be crucial to navigate the ethical use of the innovation. The objective of this study is, therefore, to explore students’ perspectives of academic integrity issues regarding the use of GenAI, focusing on plagiarism, originality, and the fairness of academic assessment results. This study utilized a qualitative research approach, based on a reflexive thematic method. The participants of this study are undergraduate students from Ambo University. The result of the study is unexpectedly paradoxical. GenAI tools have emerged as an essential revolution to improve student academic engagement. They offer students several perceived benefits, such as overcoming language barriers, access to up-to-date resources, and improved academic support. However, a serious concern arises as a substantial number of students are positive about using GenAI and relying on it for coursework as a minor violation. It is also noted that GenAI creates uneven playing fields between students who genuinely work on their own efforts and those who submit work generated by GenAI. Finally, it can be concluded that the students’ view of GenAI can shape their ethical use of these tools, which requires prioritizing awareness raising, developing policy frameworks, and monitoring policy reinforcement. The study may contribute to the quality of education by addressing issues related to academic integrity in the post-digital world.
