TL;DR

The HRV test may be used as a screening tool for OSA in adult individuals suspected of OSA, with a sensitivity and specificity of 80.00% and a specificity of 60.00% respectively.

Abstract

Background Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disease and can be diagnosed with polysomnography (PSG). However, it is limited and has a long waiting time. This study is aimed at evaluating if HRV can be a screening tool for OSA in a real‐world setting. Methods This was a prospective study that enrolled adult patients aged 18 years or older who were suspected of OSA and underwent both PSG and HRV tests. A stepwise multivariable logistic regression analysis was executed to identify predictors of OSA using HRV parameters. Results There were 15 patients with simple snoring and 15 patients with OSA who participated in the study. Among the six parameters of HRV, four parameters were included in the predictive model for OSA. Of those, only the standard deviation of the average of NN intervals in all 5‐min segments of the entire recording (SDANN) was independently associated with OSA, with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.951 (95% confidence interval of 0.905, 0.999). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of SDANN for OSA was 77.11%. An SDANN cut point of less than 106 ms had a sensitivity of 80.00% and a specificity of 60.00% for identifying OSA. Conclusions The HRV test may be used as a screening tool for OSA in adult individuals suspected of OSA. A low SDANN may be an indicator of OSA, with a sensitivity of 80.00%.

Association between minimum nocturnal heart rate and cerebral small vessel disease in patients with obstructive sleep apnea

Introduction Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been implicated in cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) through mechanisms involving intermittent hypoxia, autonomic imbalance, and metabolic dysregulation, but the pathways remain insufficiently elucidated. This retrospective observational study sought to identify clinica...

Association between severity of obstructive sleep apnea and ambulatory arterial stiffness index in a Chinese population.

There was a correlation between OSAHS severity and the AASI, and the degree of arteriosclerosis in OSAHS patients increased with an increase in the AHI, although age and hypoxic burden were the primary drivers of arterial stiffness.

Comparing Demographic and Clinical Features of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients With and Without Sleepiness: A Cross‐Sectional Study

ABSTRACT Background Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common but variable symptom in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), with unclear associations with disease severity and clinical features. This study aimed to compare demographic and clinical characteristics of OSA patients with and without EDS in an Iranian populat...

Exploring the prevalence of risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea in women.

BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a major risk factor for several medical conditions and poor quality of life. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to conduct an exploratory study to assess the prevalence of risk factors related to OSA in the adult female population seeking health care treatment at the...
