Abstract

The rapid ascent of e-commerce has revolutionized global labor and economic structures, offering unparalleled convenience while manifesting critical sustainability challenges. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the environmental, social, and economic implications of digital retail, synthesizing current peer-reviewed research to evaluate its holistic impact. Key findings identify significant hurdles in the environmental footprint of logistics, packaging, and data centers; however, the research asserts that optimized supply chains hold the potential to decrease energy consumption and urban congestion (Schultz, 2025; Reinartz et al., 2019). From a social perspective, the paper examines shifts in consumer behavior and labor rights, while the economic analysis explores the e-commerce paradigm's effect on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and market structures (Burt & Sparks, 2003). The study concludes that sustainable outcomes can only be achieved through an integrated framework that interweaves the three pillars of sustainability—environmental, social, and economic—using digital innovations like the SEER rating system to bridge the "attitude-behavior gap" (Islam et al., 2023; Escursell et al., 2021). Furthermore, it provides strategic direction for industry executives, policymakers, and consumers, charting a definitive map toward a resilient and equitable future in the digital retail landscape.

Green Technology Integration in Consumer Cooperatives and Retail Systems: A Systematic Mapping of AI Applications

The urgent global climate change issue, inefficiency in the use of resources, and a sustainability governing framework have increased the interest of applying artificial intelligence (AI) in integrating green technologies into retail systems. As member-owned retailing businesses with robust social and environmental responsibility principles, consumer cooperatives are an essential but less investigated arena for AI-based sustainability transformation. We conducted a systematic mapping study (SMS) by integrating prior work related to AI-empowered green technologies, the integration of which into consumer cooperatives and retail systems. We collected data from 41 peer-reviewed publications, working papers, and institutional documents (2010–2025) to review the research field, classify significant research themes, research questions and areas of application, explore sustainable environmental performance outcomes, and investigate the key areas lacking in the field. Results reveal that the recent literature mainly focused on the supply chains driven by AI-enabled green practices, digital transformation capacity readiness, data-driven sustainability practices and system resilience, yet with little focus on governance-specific and member involvement aspects for cooperative systems, as well as the methods to assess environmental performance impacts. While most applications associated with improved resource utilization, reduced waste and sustainable operations are demonstrated to some extent, there is a significant gap between the theory and practice on consumer cooperatives’ retail systems. This research advances the current knowledge of implementing equitable and responsible AI in cooperative-based and related retail environments, including both global and emerging economy perspectives, by proposing an array of research avenues on how to facilitate sustainable cooperative-based retail systems. The findings have significant practical implications for practitioners in cooperatives, policymakers and development organizations who aim to benefit from AI-driven green technology to facilitate sustainable retail transformation.   Key Words: Artificial Intelligence, Green Technology, Consumer Cooperatives, Retail Systems, Systematic Mapping

GREEN HR AND MSME SUSTAINABILITY: THE VITAL BRIDGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

This study examines the drivers of sustainability among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia's Surabaya processing industry. Grounded in Stakeholder Theory and the Resource-Based View, the research evaluates the direct impacts of Green Innovation, Green Human Resources, and Green Dynamic Capabilities on MSME sustainability, as well as the mediating role of Environmental Performance. Primary data were collected through questionnaires from a purposive sample of 100 respondents operating across various processing sectors, including food and beverages, textiles, and woodcrafts. Structural Equation Modelling Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) via SmartPLS was utilised to analyse the quantitative data. The empirical findings indicate that Green Innovation has an insignificant negative relationship with MSME sustainability due to high adoption costs, while Green Human Resources yields an insignificant positive direct relationship. Conversely, Green Dynamic Capabilities exhibit a significant positive direct effect, making them a critical driver in fast-evolving markets. Mediation analysis reveals distinct pathways: Environmental Performance does not mediate the relationship between Green Innovation and Green Human Resources; however, it fully mediates the impact of Green Human Resources and partially mediates the role of Green Dynamic Capabilities on corporate sustainability. This study provides valuable insights, revealing that environmental management and technical adjustments do not automatically ensure short-term business survival unless backed by unique, adaptive internal capabilities. It emphasises that for manufacturing MSMEs, fostering green dynamic capabilities and translating human awareness into measurable environmental performance are more effective long-term strategies than expensive innovations alone.

Sentiment Analysis of Customer Feedback: A Tool for Enhancing Client Engagement

The issue of sustainability has become a strategic imperative in the field of contemporary retail trading owing to the rising environmental issues, regulatory obstacles and evolving consumer demands. The modern retailers are engaged in a multifaceted global supply chain which greatly reflects on natural resources, energy use, waste production, and social wellbeing. In this paper, a detailed discussion of the sustainability principles in the contemporary retail business concerning the environmental, social, and economical aspects is provided. The paper examines the major sustainability drivers, the best current practices available to be implemented by the retailers and develops a systematic approach to a methodology to be implemented in the implementation of sustainable retail strategies. An elaborate literature review points out newer developments, barriers and missing links regarding sustainable retail research. The suggested approach combines green sourcing, operational efficiency, reduction of waste, and technology. It has been found that retailers, which follow holistic sustainability portfolios, enjoy better operational efficiencies, improved brand performance, and cost economic sustainability. It is possible that the findings will be beneficial to the academic and the practice of managers, as the systematic approach to the implementation of the sustainability idea in retail business models will be provided. The findings of this paper support that sustainability is no longer a choice but a prime requirement of competitiveness and long-term sustainability in a present-day retail business.
