KoViDoRe: A Benchmark for Korean Visual Document Retrieval

Abstract

Recent advances in multimodal retrieval have improved the ability to retrieve information from visually rich documents such as PDFs and reports. However, existing benchmarks remain largely centered on English and provide limited coverage of Korean visual documents with complex structures. Furthermore, most existing Korean resources primarily evaluate single-page retrieval, failing to capture realistic scenarios that require evidence aggregation across multiple pages. To address these gaps, we introduce KoViDoRe, a benchmark for Korean visual document retrieval. The dataset is constructed from publicly available Korean documents with diverse layouts, including tables, figures, and multi-column structures. We develop a multi-stage data curation pipeline consisting of structured document parsing, synthetic query generation using both summary-based and context-based strategies, and relevance mapping with human verification. Using KoViDoRe, we evaluate a wide range of multimodal retrieval models and observe that current models struggle to effectively handle Korean visual document retrieval, particularly in settings involving structured content and diverse query types. Motivated by this finding, we further curate a large-scale training dataset, Ko-VDR Train Public, to support the development of retrieval models tailored to Korean visual documents. Together, KoViDoRe and Ko-VDR Train Public provide a unified benchmark and training resource for Korean visual document retrieval.

MIDR: Enrichment-Augmented Indexing for Multimodal Document Retrieval

Retrieval over visually rich documents has a representation problem: important content often lives in tables, charts, figures, and layout relations that plain OCR linearizes, corrupts, or omits. ColPali-family visual retrievers address this with patch-level multi-vector indexes and late-interaction scoring, keeping image-derived retrieval on the query-time serving path. We introduce MIDR (Multimodal Indexing for Document Retrieval), a training-free framework for enrichment-augmented indexing that shifts multimodal reasoning to index time. During ingestion, a multimodal LLM converts rendered pages into verified textual fields that are indexed with BM25F and optionally fused with dense retrieval, enabling text-centric serving over multimodally grounded evidence. On ViDoRe V3, MIDR Hybrid achieves 0.6219 average nDCG across five English domains, a 23.0% relative gain over BM25, remaining competitive with ColQwen2.5. On two French-document domains, enrichment bridges English queries and French page text, lifting BM25 from 0.1532 to 0.5448 nDCG and outperforming ColQwen2.5. Across all seven domains, MIDR leads ColQwen2.5 on four while using approximately 9x smaller index memory and approximately 2x lower query latency. These results establish index-time multimodal reasoning as a compelling accuracy-deployment alternative to serving-time visual late interaction.

Doc-REFRAG: Rethinking Multimodal Document Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Real-world knowledge resides in multimodal documents, necessitating retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) for accurate question answering. However, existing multimodal RAG models are primarily designed for single-image or closed-document settings and exhibit limited accuracy in realistic multi-image scenarios. Moreover, processing numerous retrieved images incurs substantial computational overhead from irrelevant visual tokens. To address these challenges, we introduce DocLongRAG, a large-scale dataset of 343K question--answer pairs, each associated with an average of 37.4 retrieved images to reflect authentic RAG workflows. Building on this dataset, we propose Doc-REFRAG, a question-guided framework that compresses visual tokens into coarse chunks and selectively expands question-relevant ones via a lightweight RL-based selector. Experiments on six benchmarks show that Doc-REFRAG outperforms eleven strong baselines, achieving state-of-the-art accuracy with significantly lower inference latency.
