Detecting Forwarding Misbehaviour in LEO Satellite Networks with ML-Based Trust Models

Abstract

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations are increasingly deployed to support global network coverage as Space Information Networks (SINs). However, they can suffer from forwarding misbehaviour, where satellites may drop packets either selfishly to save resources or maliciously to disrupt communication. As selfish and malicious packet dropping differ in intent and impact, distinguishing them is a key first step toward enabling appropriate mitigation by the network operator. To address this problem, we propose STFMD (Satellite Trust-Based Forwarding Misbehaviour Detection), an ML-based trust model that detects forwarding misbehaviour and distinguishes selfish from malicious nodes. To support different mitigation needs, STFMD provides multiple detection settings: binary (honest, selfish), three-class (honest, malicious, selfish), and four-class (honest, selfish, grayhole, blackhole), and leverages three selected metrics groups (energy, buffer, and network performance) that are affected by forwarding misbehaviour. We also propose a new dataset collection framework for satellite networks that enables data collection under heterogeneous SIN scenarios. Our emulation results show that STFMD outperforms state-of-theart rule-based methods in detecting selfish satellites, while maintaining affordable overhead, and, further, separates selfish and malicious forwarding misbehaviour, enabling the operator to select appropriate mitigation actions.

SwarmGuard: Serverless IDS for Byzantine UAV Swarms Under Dual-Layer Attack

UAV swarms rely on AODV, a cooperative routing protocol where every node forwards packets for its neighbors, which a compromised node can exploit by advertising optimal routes and then silently dropping traffic. As UAV swarms adopt federated learning (FL) for intrusion detection, a second attack surface opens: a compro...

Sybil-Based Attack Impact on Mobile Crowdsensing-Based Navigation: Privacy Versus Utility

Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS)-based data collection can facilitate a wide range of services. Navigation MCS (N-MCS)-based applications provide the Expected Time of Arrival (ETA), helping millions in their daily lives. N-MCS users share their locations and speeds to build a current state of traffic. However, malicious users...

HyMoTrust-RPL: A Trust-Aware Hybrid Routing Protocol for Mobile IoT Networks

The IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) although widely accepted for use in the Internet of Things (IoT) remains very much exposed to mobility-induced instability and routing attacks such as: blackhole and rank manipulation. These existing challenges have been addressed independently by existin...

Reputation and Incentive Based Detection of Selfish Nodes in Delay Tolerant Networks

A Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) is a new approach to disconnected computer network architectures and also deals with issues in the heterogeneous networks that lack continuous network connectivity. DTN works to operate effectively over extreme distance. In real time applications nodes in DTN may behave with selfish behav...
