Business Models for Building Sustainability: An Exploratory Integrative Literature Review on Circular Economy, Health and Safety, Digitalization, and Stakeholder Collaboration

Abstract

The sustainability of buildings and the built environment extends beyond energy and environmental performance to circular resource use, health and safety, digital infrastructure, and stakeholder collaboration. This exploratory integrative literature review examines how these established but insufficiently connected domains reshape business models in the built environment. Since the built environment is a major source of global carbon emissions and waste, a primary research stream concerns the transition toward circular economy principles beyond traditional profit-maximization logics. The literature also highlights the potential of health- and safety-oriented innovations to reduce risks and improve indoor environments. Other studies highlight the potential of digital innovations to improve life-cycle management, resource efficiency, and risk mitigation. However, their widespread adoption faces systemic barriers, including data interoperability and cybersecurity issues, implementation costs, skills shortages, organizational resistance, and regulatory and governance challenges. The literature often emphasizes technical potential while paying less attention to value-capture mechanisms and the allocation of costs, risks, benefits, and responsibilities among the actors involved. Integrating sustainable practices, digital infrastructures, circular-economy principles, and collaborative governance is therefore essential to develop economically viable, organizationally feasible, and ethically responsible business models for the built environment, across the building life cycle and among public and private stakeholders.

Advancing Sustainable Development Through Green Innovation: The Role of Environmental Regulations, Green Core Competencies, and Absorptive Capacity

This study examines how environmental regulations and green innovation influence sustainable business performance in Vietnam's hospitality industry. Drawing on the resource‐based view and natural resource‐based view frameworks, the study investigates how regulatory pressure and internal green capabilities contribute to economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Data were collected through a structured survey of 357 managers and board members from hotels and resorts across major tourist destinations in Vietnam. The results reveal that environmental regulations play a significant role in driving green innovation, which in turn enhances sustainable business performance. Green innovation also serves as a key driver of competitive advantage, operational efficiency, and long‐term profitability. These findings highlight the strategic importance of integrating green innovation and sustainability practices to meet regulatory requirements, strengthen market positioning, and support holistic business success. The study provides actionable insights for policymakers, business leaders, and researchers seeking to advance sustainable development within the hospitality sector.

From green workforce to green supply networks: A systematic review of green HRM and green supply chain management practices driving sustainability in India

This systematic literature review examines the integration of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) and Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices in Indian firms, focusing on their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Employing a structured methodology, the review synthesises findings from academic databases, including Scopus, covering research articles and reports published between 2014 and 2024. The analysis reveals that GHRM initiatives, such as environmentally focused recruitment and employee development programs, effectively cultivate an organisational culture oriented toward environmental responsibility, while GSCM practices, notably sustainable procurement and waste minimisation strategies, significantly advance environmental sustainability objectives. Collectively, these practices demonstrate substantial positive impacts on specific SDGs, including Climate Action (SDG 13), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8). The review also identifies persistent barriers to widespread implementation, notably financial limitations, ambiguous regulatory frameworks, organisational resistance to change, and deficiencies in robust sustainability performance measurement. To address these challenges, the study advances strategic frameworks alongside policy recommendations aimed at stimulating and institutionalising sustainability oriented initiatives within Indian enterprises. This review contributes to the literature by exploring the synergistic potential of integrating Green Human Resource Management and Green Supply Chain Management practices, thereby advancing broader sustainability objectives aligned with global development frameworks.

Enhancing circularity in concrete waste management: a conceptual framework of stakeholder engagement, barriers and strategies for sustainable collaboration

Concrete waste accounts for the largest share of global construction and demolition waste, intensifying resource depletion, landfill pressure, and embodied carbon emissions from cement production. The circular economy offers a regenerative pathway through reduction/prevention, reuse, maintenance/repair/refurbishment, and recycling, yet implementation remains limited by socio-organisational challenges. While existing literature has advanced technical aspects of these strategies, stakeholder roles and collaboration in concrete-specific contexts remain fragmented and are often examined within broader construction and demolition waste frameworks. To address this gap, this study conducts a systematic review of 51 studies to examine stakeholder engagement, barriers and strategies in circular concrete waste management (CCWM). Eleven stakeholder groups were identified, and a Responsible-Accountable-Consulted-Informed (RACI) governance framework was applied to map stakeholder roles from design through end-of-life. The findings show that CCWM implementation depends on coordinated life-cycle engagement between primary value chain actors and supporting actors, with persistent gaps in accountability, early contractor involvement, traceability and sustainability performance assessment. The findings further revealed that unclear roles, undervalued expertise, misaligned priorities, regulatory inconsistencies, poor communication and limited knowledge sharing are cross-cutting barriers to collaboration. These barriers are relational than uniform, affecting stakeholders differently and requiring targeted interventions from actors with appropriate leverage. Effective collaboration, therefore, requires integrated mechanisms for capacity building, governance, economic incentives, digital support, and performance monitoring. The study integrates these insights into a socio-technical conceptual framework that links stakeholders, engagement barriers, and pragmatic strategies. This framework supports the diagnosis of coordination failures and prioritization of interventions to strengthen stakeholder collaboration and accelerate circular transitions in the construction sector.

INTEGRATING GREEN SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT AND TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE MSME PERFORMANCE IN EMERGING ECONOMICS

The global business environment is increasingly shaped by environmental concerns, regulatory pressures, and stakeholder demands for sustainability, compelling Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in emerging economies to adopt sustainable business practices. This study conducts a systematic literature review to examine the integration of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) and Total Quality Management (TQM) as strategies for enhancing MSME performance and long-term sustainability. The review highlights that GSCM embeds environmental considerations across supply chain activities ranging from procurement and production to distribution and end-of-life product management while TQM fosters continuous improvement, stakeholder involvement, and quality-driven processes. The synergy between GSCM and TQM is shown to amplify both environmental and organizational benefits, although adoption and effectiveness vary across different institutional and resource contexts. The advanced institutional support and quality management integration facilitate better GSCM–TQM synergy, whereas Indonesia faces challenges such as limited resources and uneven technological adoption. The findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of how integrated quality and environmental management strategies can be adapted to diverse MSME ecosystems, offering practical insights for policymakers and practitioners aiming to foster resilient and sustainable enterprises.

Environmental Risk Management, Green Chemistry Adoption, and Competitive Advantage in Industrial Organizations: A Comprehensive Review of the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sectors

Industrial organizations operate in an increasingly complex environment where environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, and market competitiveness intersect. This review synthesizes current evidence on how integrated environmental risk management and green chemistry adoption contribute to sustainable competitive advantage in industrial settings, with particular emphasis on chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The analysis examines the evolution of environmental risk frameworks from end of pipe controls to proactive, systems‐based governance approaches. It evaluates green chemistry principles, metrics, and implementation pathways, highlighting technical innovations in solvent selection, process intensification, and digital enablement. Empirical evidence linking sustainability practices to cost efficiency, innovation capacity, regulatory resilience, and access to capital is critically assessed. The review identifies converging paradigms, including safe and sustainable by design, circular economy principles, and responsible research and innovation as critical enablers of scalable adoption. Practical implications for managers include prioritizing cross functional collaboration, investing in metrics driven decision support, and aligning sustainability initiatives with core business strategy to ensure long term value creation. Policy recommendations emphasize coherent regulatory frameworks, support for technology diffusion, and multi stakeholder platforms for knowledge exchange. This synthesis provides a foundation for future research on adoption pathways, performance measurement, and context sensitive implementation models across industrial sectors.

Green Digital Technologies, Circular Economy Adoption, and Sustainable Business Performance: The Mediating Role of Eco-Innovation and the Moderating Role of Institutional Support

Green digital technologies are increasingly used to improve environmental visibility, resource efficiency, and sustainability-oriented decision-making. However, their association with sustainable business performance may depend on whether firms convert digital resources into organizational capabilities and implemented circular practices. Drawing on the Natural Resource-Based View, Dynamic Capabilities Theory, and Institutional Theory, this study examines a moderated serial mediation model in which eco-innovation and circular economy adoption sequentially mediate the relationship between green digital technologies and sustainable business performance, while institutional support moderates the relationship between eco-innovation and circular economy adoption. Survey data were collected from managers and professionals in Saudi industrial and manufacturing firms. Of the 450 questionnaires distributed, 420 were returned, and 386 usable responses remained after data-quality screening and were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling in SmartPLS 4. The results show that green digital technologies are positively associated with eco-innovation (β = 0.662, p < 0.001) and circular economy adoption (β = 0.263, p < 0.001). Eco-innovation is positively associated with circular economy adoption (β = 0.487, p < 0.001), which, in turn, is strongly associated with sustainable business performance (β = 0.726, p < 0.001). The serial indirect association through eco-innovation and circular economy adoption is significant (β = 0.234, p < 0.001). Institutional support also strengthens the eco-innovation–circular economy adoption relationship, although the interaction is comparatively modest (β = 0.118, p = 0.002). The study contributes by distinguishing eco-innovation as a resource-conversion capability from circular economy adoption as an implemented organizational practice and by identifying institutional support as a boundary condition within Saudi industrial firms.
