Abstract
Environmental sustainability has emerged as one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century due to accelerating climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. Although scientific understanding of environmental issues has grown substantially, translating this knowledge into effective action remains a persistent global challenge, commonly described as the “knowledge–action gap.” This paper conducts a narrative and integrative review of recent literature (2018–2024) to examine the transition from environmental awareness to practical implementation, focusing on the roles of governance, technological innovation, education, community participation, corporate responsibility, and international cooperation. Following a systematic-style search of peer-reviewed and institutional sources, the review synthesises findings into an integrated conceptual framework linking six interdependent domains — policy and governance, technology and innovation, education and awareness, community participation, corporate responsibility, and international cooperation — to sustainable development outcomes. The study identifies persistent economic, political, social, and technological barriers to implementation and proposes a set of ten evidence-based recommendations for accelerating the transition from knowledge to action. The findings suggest that achieving environmental sustainability requires interdisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based policymaking, technological advancement, behavioural transformation, and long-term institutional commitment operating jointly rather than in isolation.
Management of natural resources (NR) and the environment often creates a gap between sustainability commitments and the benefits that stakeholders actually receive. This article aims to explain how ecological, economic, social, health, cultural, and educational benefits are formed, as well as to identify barriers and strategies for fair implementation. The study uses a qualitative literature review that is integrative and interpretative, analyzing reputable journal articles since 2020, with purposive-iterative searching, conceptual coding, cross-source comparison, and thematic-narrative synthesis. The findings show that sustainability benefits are formed through protecting natural capital, maintaining ecosystem services, reducing risks, strengthening local rights and capacities, and recognizing the plurality of values and knowledge. However, these benefits don't automatically spread evenly. Social-ecological complexity, institutional fragmentation, tenure conflicts, power imbalances, limited funding and data, weak enforcement, short-term market pressures, and symbolic participation often turn policies into mere administrative compliance without real improvements. This article proposes adaptive, polycentric, ecosystem-based, and equitable governance that integrates clear rights, benefit-sharing, cross-sector coordination, long-term funding, open data, participatory monitoring, and policy correction mechanisms. The main contribution of the article is a five-layer analytical framework connecting ecological boundaries, values and benefits, actors and power relations, institutions and instruments, as well as multidimensional outputs. This framework emphasizes that success isn't just measured by compliance or the scale of programs, but by the integrity of the ecosystem, the fairness of benefits, the legitimacy of processes, and long-term resilience

Climate change has been identified as one of the most urgent global challenges due to its effects on ecosystems, as well as on the economy, health, food security, governance, and the well-being of societies. The purpose of this report was to examine the role of education as a tool for improving environmental awareness, resilience, and citizen participation in response to the ecological challenges caused by climate change. For this purpose, this scientific essay was based on a critical and integrative analysis of recent scientific literature published in indexed journals covering research areas such as environmental education, climate literacy, resilience, governance, and sustainability. This analysis indicated that the climate crisis transcends a purely environmental perspective and represents a highly multidimensional problem requiring coordinated responses from educational systems, public policies, and social participation. It was found that education itself promotes the development of competencies related to climate risk awareness, sustainable values, responsible lifestyles, and the fostering of adaptation processes and collective action. As the main contribution, this study introduces an integrative conceptual model that links climate change, education, climate literacy, environmental awareness, sustainable values, resilience, citizen participation, and collective action to the construction of sustainable societies as a sequence. Finally, education emerged as the central axis connecting scientific knowledge and social transformation.

Sustainable communities have become essential in addressing global environmental challenges, rapid urbanization, and resource scarcity. Innovation and technology play a critical role in achieving sustainability by enabling efficient resource use, environmental protection, and socio-economic development. This paper examines the role of technological advancements—such as renewable energy, smart city solutions, Internet of Things (IoT), and data-driven governance—in improving energy systems, transportation, waste management, water resources, and urban planning before 2018. The study highlights how these technologies contribute to reduced carbon emissions, enhanced quality of life, and economic resilience. It also emphasizes the importance of socio-technical factors like policy frameworks, stakeholder participation, and community engagement for successful implementation. Despite benefits, challenges such as technological inequality, high costs, and governance complexities remain significant. Using secondary data from academic and institutional sources, the paper evaluates both qualitative and quantitative impacts of technological interventions. The findings suggest that innovation, supported by strong policies and inclusive approaches, is key to achieving long-term sustainability. The paper concludes with recommendations for policymakers, planners, and researchers to promote scalable and inclusive solutions for building resilient and environmentally sustainable communities

In recent years, the impacts of climate change have become increasingly apparent. Hence, the demand for effective adaptation strategies continues to grow. Among these strategies, sustainable stormwater management has increasingly gained attention as a solution to manage stormwater impacts and enhance climate resilience. Stormwater management has evolved from an engineering concern toward an integrated socio-environmental process that emphasizes sustainability, resilience, and community engagement. Citizen engagement has become a critical component of this shift, influencing the design, acceptance, and long-term performance of stormwater systems. Despite a growing number of studies engaging citizens in climate adaptation strategies, a synthesis of citizen engagement initiatives in sustainable stormwater management is lacking. This study addresses this gap by systematically reviewing how citizen engagement is conceptualized and how it contributes to the specific case of sustainable stormwater management. Using the PRISMA methodology, we analyzed 41 peer-reviewed studies focusing on: (1) the types and contributions of citizen engagement and (2) the stages at which citizen engagement occurs in sustainable stormwater management. The results highlight that citizen engagement serves as a key driver for improving climate resilience by enhancing adaptive capacity, increasing inclusiveness in decision-making, and fostering ownership and trust. However, our review also reveals that citizen engagement is concentrated in the early foundational stages of problem definition and knowledge co-production, while participation across the full stormwater management cycle remains limited. There are trade-offs among citizen engagement levels in terms of outcomes, such as building trust, decision-making and social learning. From the results, we derive a Stage-Based Citizen Engagement Framework that recommends types of citizen engagement at different stages of sustainable stormwater management and adaptation planning processes in general. Future research can build on our framework to develop creative approaches for engaging citizens in an inclusive manner across all stages in climate adaptation.

Many sustainability initiatives supporting water conservation and energy transition struggle to achieve widespread societal adoption because they are framed primarily through narratives of restriction, scarcity, and responsibility. The transition toward sustainable water and energy systems is therefore not only a technological and policy challenge but also a human-centered socio-technical challenge requiring effective user engagement alongside engineering and infrastructure development. Drawing on experiential consumption theory (Holbrook & Hirschman, 1982), Consumer Culture Theory (Arnould & Thompson, 2005), and the cultural construction of risk (Beck, 1992; Douglas & Wildavsky, 1982), this paper develops a conceptual perspective explaining how experiential mechanisms may complement technological and policy interventions by supporting user engagement with sustainability initiatives. The study introduces the concept of experiential pathways to sustainability and proposes a conceptual framework in which experiential engagement is theorized as a mediating mechanism linking sustainability initiatives within the water-energy nexus to the adoption of sustainable behaviors. Rather than replacing existing socio-technical approaches, the framework complements them by highlighting the experiential processes through which engineering solutions and sustainability initiatives can become meaningful and desirable for end users.
