Twenty-Five Years of Escherichia coli Antimicrobial Resistance in Bangladesh: A One Health Review of Phylogeny and Trends

2026 · Journal of Research in Veterinary Sciences · 0 citations

TL;DR

This review is the first to integrate 25-year temporal trends, phylogenetic diversity, and One Health transmission dynamics of E. coli antimicrobial resistance in Bangladesh from 2000 to 2025.

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of Escherichia coli in Bangladesh is a multifaceted public health concern, featuring extensive multidrug resistance across clinical, environmental, and poultry sectors. The review aimed to address gaps in understanding prevalence, phylogenetic diversity, transmission dynamics, intervention effectiveness within a One Health framework, and to evaluate the resistance distribution across the human, animal, and environmental sectors from 2000 to 2025. The review employed diverse methodologies, including phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility testing, molecular detection of resistance genes, whole genome sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses, reflecting a multidisciplinary One Health approach. Findings revealed widespread multidrug-resistant and extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing E. coli with high prevalence in poultry, humans, and environmental reservoirs; diverse phylogenetic lineages, including high-risk clones such as ST131; and frequent detection of plasmid-mediated resistance genes like blaCTX-M variants and mcr-1 facilitating horizontal gene transfer. This paper also evaluates different AMR mitigation strategies reported in the literature, such as the urgent need for standardized, integrated surveillance employing phenotypic testing, molecular characterization, deepened understanding of resistance determinants, genetic diversity, and risk factors, implementation of regular workshops reducing unnecessary antibiotic use & coordinated One Health strategies. This review is the first to integrate 25-year temporal trends, phylogenetic diversity, and One Health transmission dynamics of E. coli antimicrobial resistance in Bangladesh.

PS4-26. Prevalence, Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles, and Genomic Determinants of Enterobacter Hormaechei and Escherichia coli Isolated from Communally Grazed Cattle in South Africa.

Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing global health issue of human, animal, and environmental health in the One Health paradigm. Food-producing animals are believed to be one of the main sources of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and resistance plasmids that could be transferred to the food chain, environmental...

Comparative Genomic Analysis of Multidrug‐Resistant Escherichia coli Across Poultry–Human–Environmental Interfaces

ABSTRACT The emergence of multidrug‐resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli in poultry represents a critical One Health concern, particularly in developing countries. This study employed a comparative genomic approach to investigate the genomic characteristics, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles, virulence determinants,...

mcr‐Mediated Colistin Resistance in Escherichia coli: A One Health Review of Reported Prevalence Across Human, Animal, Food, and Environmental Sectors

ABSTRACT Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health problem that threatens the effective treatment of bacterial infections. Escherichia coli is widely used as an indicator organism for monitoring AMR because it circulates among humans, animals, food, and the environment. As resistance to many commonly us...

Epidemiological insights into virulence and antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli across dairy farms in Nagpur district

Antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) circulating across the human-animal-environmental interface is a major one-health concern. This study (April 2025–January 2026) investigated the occurrence, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns of E. coli across 558 samples comprising animal (n = 444)...

PREVALENCE OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN CLINICAL ISOLATES OF E. COLI

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents one of the most pressing global public health challenges of the 21st century. Among Gram-negative pathogens, Escherichia coli (E. coli) plays a central role due to its dual nature as a commensal organism and a frequent opportunistic pathogen. This review critically evaluates th...
