Abstract

Digital transformation in higher education represents not only a technological shift but also a fundamental change in pedagogy, aligning with the demands of a globalized society. This systematic literature review (2020–2024) examines how emerging technologies in higher education impact learning outcomes, foster entrepreneurial innovation, and advance Quality Education (SDG 4). Conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive search of Scopus and Web of Science databases was performed. This process yielded 41 relevant studies, which were subsequently appraised for quality using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist. Using bibliometric analysis and network mapping, we identified four major thematic clusters in the literature. Based on these clusters, we propose an integrative theoretical framework that links digital transformation initiatives to educational outcomes, innovation, and sustainability goals. We outline crucial future research directions (e.g., addressing infrastructure challenges, enhancing digital pedagogy, and scaling innovation labs) to guide scholars and practitioners. Our review provides a timely synthesis of current knowledge and offers actionable insights for leveraging digital transformation to improve global educational quality and equity.

This research contributes to the development of the Differentiated Ethno-STEM Knowledge (DESK) framework, providing a systematic roadmap for teacher professional development. Conclusively, these findings offer actionable insights for sustainable education policy, directly advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) through contextually relevant and inclusive 21st-century learning strategies.

Education for Sustainable Development Through the Arts as a Driver of Educational Innovation: A Scoping Review in the Context of the SDGs

This article addresses the need to rethink educational innovation as a transformative driver for sustainability within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG4. Its aim is to analyze the role of arts education as a catalyst for this innovation, with creativity as its primary strategy. To this end, a Scoping Review methodology following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. A review of Open Access (OA) publications indexed in Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus between 2000 and 2025 is conducted. The results of this analysis show that most studies (n = 19) are developed in higher education contexts, with a strong emphasis on publications labeled as innovative and grounded in creativity, as well as a frequent association between innovation and the use of new technologies or digital tools. These publications also explicitly link their proposals to the SDGs, highlighting the central role of arts education in sustainability. However, there is a limited presence of studies at earlier or compulsory educational levels—such as early childhood, primary, or secondary education—as well as in museum contexts, which are closely connected to the arts. The article concludes that arts education holds significant transformative potential to foster engagement with sustainability in the pursuit of critical and creative generations for a more sustainable world.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY-SUPPORTED PROBLEM SOLVING IN ECONOMICS EDUCATION: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF EVIDENCE FROM 2021–2025

This study aims to systematically explore the integration of digital technology and problem-solving strategies in economic learning, with a particular focus on developing countries, especially Indonesia. A qualitative approach using the Systematic Literature Review method was applied to ten internationally indexed scientific articles published between 2021 to 2025. Data analysis was conducted using NVivo 12 Plus software to examine patterns, research gaps, and relevant best practices. The research reveals three main findings: the integration of digital technology and problem-solving strategies significantly contributes to the creation of an interactive, adaptive, and contextual learning environment through gamification, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and interactive e-learning platforms; limitations in digital infrastructure and low technological literacy among educators are major obstacles; and pedagogical reform is needed through teacher training, curriculum modernization, and digital transformation policies. These findings provide actionable recommendations for educators and policymakers in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4 for inclusive and quality education. The novelty of this research lies in the conceptual synthesis that integrates digital technology with contextual problem-solving strategies in economics education in developing countries.

Digital teaching competence as an indicator of institutional innovation in private schools in Esmeraldas, Ecuador

Digital transformation has reshaped education in contemporary times, with institutional and teacher demands creating new challenges within a technology- and knowledge-driven society. Meanwhile, in this context, teachers' digital competence has become strategically important, acquiring strategic significance in changing teaching and learning processes and fostering sustainable institutional change. However, research focusing on this competence as a predictor of institutional innovation is scarce, especially in church-affiliated schools. This study aimed to examine teachers' digital competence as a measure of institutional innovation in church-affiliated schools in Esmeraldas, using an exploratory method based on a systematic review of the most recent scientific literature. A systematic review was proposed, following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines as a methodological approach, to facilitate the review. Publications indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, SciELO, and Dialnet from 2020 to 2026 were included. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 25 studies were included in the analysis. The findings suggest that teachers' digital competence has shifted from an instrumental perspective to a multidimensional one based on technological, pedagogical, collaborative, and innovative capabilities. Similarly, a strong relationship was found between digital skills, pedagogical innovation, digital culture, organizational learning, and institutional innovation. As a starting point, the CDD-II model is introduced, which describes how teachers' digital skills become a catalyst for the sustainable transformation of education. It is implied that teachers' digital competence is a strategic instrument for institutional innovation and a fundamental tool for improving educational quality in sensitive environments.
