AVOA-DMC algorithm: an algorithm for calculating traffic signal timing

Abstract

To address Sudden congestion caused by a concentrated surge of traffic in a short period of time after concerts or other extreme events, this study proposed a novel hybrid traffic signal timing optimization algorithm (AVOA-DMC). And designed a new traffic light timing scheme using this algorithm.Finally it was verified through Vissim,the result showed that average queue lengths decreased by 42% and 13.24% for left-turn and right-turn lanes,maximum queue lengths reduced by 47.91% and 31.78%, stop counts dropped by 59.2% and 32.23%, average stop delays decreased by 87.9%, and average vehicle delays decreased by 42.6%. This approach enhances road capacity during sudden congestion events, providing an efficient and feasible technical reference for emergency traffic management on urban roads.Although the algorithm effectively alleviates congestion, there is still shortcoming that the algorithm not being implemented in realworld scenarios.
