Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming educational systems worldwide, redefining how teaching and learning are conceptualized, delivered, and assessed. While technological innovations offer unprecedented opportunities for personalized learning, enhanced engagement, data-driven decision-making, and expanded access to knowledge, they also expose a significant generational divide among educators and learners. This divide is characterized by differing levels of technological proficiency, pedagogical beliefs, digital literacy competencies, and attitudes toward educational innovation. As schools, universities, and training institutions increasingly transition from traditional teacher-centred approaches to technology-assisted and AI-enhanced learning environments, understanding and addressing this generation gap has become a critical educational priority. This paper critically examines the nature, causes, and implications of the generation gap in the context of twenty-first-century educational transformation. Drawing upon contemporary literature on educational technology, digital literacy, generational theory, innovation adoption, and AI in education, the paper explores how educators from different generations navigate the challenges and opportunities associated with emerging technologies. Particular attention is given to the contrasting experiences of digital natives and digital immigrants, the evolving role of teachers in AI-supported learning environments, and the impact of technological change on curriculum design, assessment practices, learner engagement, and educational equity. The paper further investigates how institutional readiness, professional development, infrastructure availability, leadership support, and policy frameworks influence the successful integration of AI-driven educational tools. The analysis argues that the generation gap should not be viewed merely as a technological challenge but as a multidimensional educational issue encompassing cultural, pedagogical, ethical, and socio-economic dimensions. Without deliberate interventions, disparities in digital competence and technological confidence may exacerbate existing educational inequalities and hinder meaningful innovation. However, when supported through collaborative learning cultures, targeted professional development, intergenerational mentoring, and inclusive policy initiatives, the generational divide can become a catalyst for educational renewal and transformation. The paper proposes a framework for bridging generational differences through lifelong learning, digital capacity building, and human-centred AI integration that preserves the relational and ethical foundations of education while embracing technological advancement. The study concludes that the future of education depends not on replacing traditional pedagogical wisdom with artificial intelligence, but on fostering productive partnerships between human expertise and technological innovation. Bridging the generation gap is therefore essential for creating resilient, inclusive, and future-ready education systems capable of preparing learners for the complexities of an increasingly digital and AI-driven world.

Beyond the Device: Reforming Higher Education and Teacher Education Curricula from ICT Literacy to AI Pedagogical Readiness in East Africa

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming teaching, learning, assessment, and educational practice, requiring education systems to rethink how future educators are prepared for AI-enabled teaching and learning. The Nairobi Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies in Education for Eastern Africa (2024) highlights the need for education systems to strengthen AI capacity, ethical adoption and human-centred innovation. However, despite significant investments in digital infrastructure and ICT literacy across East African higher education institutions, many teacher education curricula remain focused on basic digital skills and technology operation rather than the advanced competencies required for AI-enabled teaching and learning. This creates a growing mismatch between existing teacher preparation approaches and the knowledge, pedagogical skills, and ethical awareness required for responsible AI integration. By adopting a qualitative conceptual research design supported by systematic document analysis published from (2020-2026) of contemporary scholarship and key policy frameworks, including UNESCO's AI Competency Framework for Teachers, the OECD Digital Education Outlook, and the African Union AI Strategy, this conceptual paper aimed to examine how higher education and teacher education curricula can transition from ICT literacy to AI pedagogical readiness. The paper argues that AI readiness requires more than technological proficiency; it requires educators who can critically understand, ethically evaluate, and pedagogically apply AI in teaching, learning, assessment, research, and professional practice. It proposes curriculum reform that positions AI pedagogical readiness as a core graduate attribute within teacher education. The paper concludes that coordinated curriculum reform, institutional support, and responsible AI governance are essential for preparing AI-ready educators capable of advancing equitable, innovative, and sustainable education in East Africa.

Digital Transformation in Secondary Education in Greece: A Pedagogical Proposal Combining Flipped Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Collaborative Inclusive Teaching

The rapid evolution of digital technologies has brought about significant changes in the contemporary educational landscape, creating new opportunities for the implementation of innovative pedagogical approaches. This study proposes a comprehensive teaching framework that combines flipped learning, collaborative teaching, and the use of artificial intelligence tools within the context of secondary education in Greece. Emphasis is placed on strengthening student-centered learning, developing digital literacy, and promoting inclusive education through differentiated teaching practices. The proposed approach aligns with contemporary educational trends that highlight the importance of active participation, critical thinking, and the effective use of digital environments. Artificial intelligence is examined as a tool to support personalized learning and accessibility, particularly for students with diverse learning profiles. At the same time, collaborative learning promotes social interaction and knowledge construction. This study contributes to the scholarly discourse on the digital transformation of education in Greece by proposing a theoretically grounded and pedagogically applicable teaching model. The study introduces an “AI-Enhanced Inclusive Flipped Learning Model” as a flexible and scalable framework for the digital transformation of secondary education.

Preparing Learners and Teachers for an AI-Driven Future: Emerging Trends, Pedagogical Challenges, and Critical Perspectives in Pre-University AI Education: A Systematic Literature Review

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into pre-university education has emerged as a priority area for educational research and development, prompting renewed attention to teacher preparation, curriculum design, and digital literacy. Motivated by Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) and the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), this study presents a systematic literature review (SLR) examining research trends in AI education within pre-university educational settings. Following PRISMA guidelines, the review analysed 42 studies published spanning the period from 2009 to May 2026, although most were published from 2019 onwards. The findings identify four major thematic areas: teacher education, curriculum development and pedagogical foundations, AI literacy and ethical competencies, and the educational implications of generative AI. The evidence indicates that effective AI integration depends on teacher preparedness, structured curricular frameworks, and critical and ethical approaches that promote responsible digital citizenship and inclusive educational practices. The review also highlights the need to strengthen institutional policies, regulatory frameworks, and professional development. Research gaps include the scarcity of longitudinal studies, limited classroom-based empirical evidence, and the lack of standardised instruments for assessing AI literacy. Overall, the findings may inform inclusive, interdisciplinary, and pedagogically grounded educational models that enable the critical and responsible integration of AI, aligned with the development of equitable, resilient, and sustainable educational systems.

Adapting Competency-Based Innovative Pedagogies in Higher Education for East African Universities: Pathways to Human Capital Development and Economic Transformation

Higher education is under increasing pressure to produce graduates equipped with the competencies required for rapidly evolving knowledge economies, technological change, and sustainable development. However, despite widespread competency-based education reforms across East Africa, teaching in many universities remains predominantly lecture-centred, limiting the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, digital competence, entrepreneurship, and other transferable skills required by contemporary labour markets. This study employed an Integrative Literature Review (ILR) and thematic analysis of contemporary literature to synthesise global evidence on competency-based innovative pedagogies (CBIPs) in higher education, and examine their contextual adaptation within East African universities. The findings indicate that CBIPs promote learner-centred, active, real-world, collaborative, technology-enhanced, and experiential learning that strengthens graduate competencies for lifelong learning and employability. Rather than advocating direct transfer of international pedagogical models, the study proposes a context-sensitive adaptation framework that integrates curriculum and assessment reform, academic staff development, digital transformation, university–industry collaboration, and enabling institutional and policy environments to support sustainable implementation. The framework demonstrates that pedagogical transformation, rather than curriculum reform alone, is essential for strengthening graduate competencies and advancing sustainable higher education transformation. The study concludes that context-sensitive adaptation of CBIPs can enhance graduate employability, foster innovation and entrepreneurship, and position East African universities as strategic contributors to sustainable human capital development and regional economic transformation.
