Effect of Music on Pain, Anxiety, and Satisfaction During Intrauterine Device Application: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine the effect of music played during intrauterine device (IUD) insertion on perceived pain, state anxiety, and satisfaction levels. The study was conducted with 70 women who applied to a maternal and child health and family planning center and were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups using simple randomization. Data were collected using a Demographic Information Form, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-I), and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), as well as Bluetooth speakers and the musical piece Evgeny Grinko-Valse. Participants in the intervention group listened to music before and during the IUD insertion procedure, whereas the control group received routine care only. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 with appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Women in the music group had significantly lower perceived pain (p < 0.001) and state anxiety levels during the procedure (p = 0.022), and significantly higher satisfaction levels compared with the control group (p < 0.001). In addition, post-procedure state anxiety levels were positively correlated with pain intensity experienced during and after the procedure (r = 0.542 and r = 0.496, respectively; p < 0.001), and negatively correlated with procedural satisfaction (r = -0.652; p < 0.001). These findings suggest that listening to music during IUD insertion may help reduce pain and anxiety while potentially enhancing patient satisfaction. Trial Registration: NCT06215183.

“Effect of Music Listening on Hemodynamic Changes in Patients with Facial Trauma During Erich's Arch Bar Application: A Randomized Controlled Trial”

Background: Erich's arch bar fixation can be discomforting for patients, as it can increase heart rate, blood pressure, and anxiety. Due to its simple and cost effective nature , music therapy is being considered as a method to help calm patients during surgical procedures.Aim: To evaluate the effects of music therapy on pain, anxiety, procedural time and vital parameters for patients undergoing intermaxillary fixation. Settings and Design: A prospective, randomized controlled study was conducted in the oral and maxillofacial surgery outpatient department.Methods: Fifty-eight patients underwent intermaxillary fixation under local anaesthesia. They were randomized into two groups where music group (n=29) listened to calming music with wireless headphones during the procedure and control group (n=29) did not. Vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, and oxygen levels were measured throughout. Pain was assessed with a visual analogue scale; anxiety was measured with a Likert scale. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05.Results: Patients in the music group showed more stable vital signs, with a smaller increase in blood pressure and heart rate (p = 0.001). The study showed reduction in pain (2.59 vs. 4.28), decreased anxiety scores (1.41 vs. 3.41) and shortened surgical duration (61.14 vs. 75.38 minutes, p = 0.001). Effects of music on the breathing rate and oxygen levels were insignificant.Conclusion: Listening to music effectively reduces pain and anxiety during intermaxillary fixation with enhanced patient comfort and stability, besides being a safer, simpler and an affordable modality.

Non-Pharmacologic Interventions for Hemodynamic Stability During Dental Implant Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES To assess the efficacy of non-pharmacologic interventions, specifically auditory distraction (music or comedy) and haptic distraction (stress-relief device), in maintaining hemodynamic stability during dental implant surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS This was a prospective, single-center, randomized trial. We included 150 patients getting single-tooth implants. Patients were split into three groups of 50. The Control group got standard care. The Auditory Distraction group listened to patient-selected Guzheng music or Xiangsheng comedy. The Haptic Distraction group used a stress-relief device. We recorded systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate before and after surgery. We used paired t-tests and one-way ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc tests for analysis. RESULTS Surgery increased blood pressure in all groups (p < 0.0001). The heart rate response was different between groups. The Control group had a significant increase in heart rate (p < 0.05). Both the Auditory and Haptic Distraction groups had lower heart rates after surgery (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the two interventions. CONCLUSIONS Non-pharmacologic interventions may not fully prevent the rise in blood pressure from procedure-related BP elevation. However, these methods help stop the heart rate from rising due to physiological stress. Listening to familiar music or comedy, or using a simple stress-relief device, can help steady the heart during dental implant surgery. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Auditory and haptic distractions are low-cost, non-invasive, and effective adjuncts for managing procedure-related physiological stress. By stabilizing heart rate, these interventions enhance patient safety and comfort, offering a viable alternative or supplement to pharmacological sedation in implant dentistry.

Effect of binaural beats and isochronic tones on anxiety during impacted mandibular third molar surgery: a randomized controlled trial.

Dental anxiety is a common problem in oral surgery practices. Recently, interest has increased in non-pharmacological methods to reduce anxiety, such as auditory stimulation. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effects of binaural beats (BB) and isochronic tones (IT), two forms of auditory stimulation, on dental anxiety and physiological parameters during impacted mandibular third molar surgery. Ninety patients were assigned equally to BB, IT, and control (no intraoperative auditory stimulation) groups. Anxiety levels were assessed using the MDAS, DFS, STAI-S, and a visual analogue scale pre- and postoperatively. The BB and IT group patients also completed a satisfaction questionnaire. Physiological parameters (respiratory rate, pulse rate, blood pressure [SBP, DBP], oxygen saturation) were recorded at eight surgical stages. No significant between-group differences were observed in the pre- or postoperative anxiety questionnaire scores. Isolated between-group differences in physiological parameters were observed: mean SBP at incision was lowest in the BB group (P = 0.041), while mean respiratory rate at anaesthesia was lowest in the IT group (P = 0.015). The majority of BB and IT group patients (78.3%) reported that they would prefer auditory stimulation in future dental treatments. The findings indicate that BB and IT have a limited effect on reducing dental anxiety during impacted mandibular third molar surgery and do not support a definitive anxiolytic benefit. Auditory stimulation may transiently influence certain stress-related physiological responses; however, further studies using objective neurophysiological measures and standardized protocols are required to clarify their role in oral surgery.
