Abstract

Lanthanum-based double perovskite oxides (DPOs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their structural tunability, defect chemistry, and redox-active transition-metal centers, making them promising candidates for energy-related applications. In the present study, a series of novel La2-xCaxMn2-yCoyO6-δ (x = y = 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7) DPOs were synthesized via a citrate–nitrate sol–gel method, enabling homogeneous precursor mixing and precise control over microstructural evolution. X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of a phase-pure monoclinic crystal structure with space group C2/c (No. 15) for all DPO compositions, while systematic variations in lattice parameters and unit-cell volume demonstrated the influence of dual-site Ca/Co substitution on the crystal structure. Williamson–Hall (W–H) and size–strain plot (SSP) analyses revealed a progressive reduction in crystallite size and lattice strain, accompanied by an increase in dislocation density with increasing dopant concentration, confirming effective microstructural tuning. FTIR spectroscopy further verified the formation of the double perovskite framework through the characteristic metal–oxygen vibration at approximately 602 cm−1, while EDX analysis confirmed the successful incorporation of the constituent elements without detectable impurities. The compositional dependence of the oxygen-defect characteristics indicates that dual-site substitution provides an effective strategy for tailoring the structural and defect chemistry of La2-xCaxMn2-yCoyO6-δ. The combined structural stability, controlled microstructure, and defect engineering highlight the potential of these materials for oxygen electrocatalysis, solid oxide fuel cell cathodes, and other energy-conversion and environmental applications.

Dual-site La/Ni substitution stabilizes cubic perovskite SrCoO3-δ for efficient oxygen evolution.

SrCoO3-δ has been widely regarded as a promising electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) owing to its superior structural tunability and compositional flexibility. However, the cubic perovskite (CP) phase of SrCoO3-δ is difficult to stabilize under ambient pressure, and single-site substitution is insuf...

Influence of Sr Substitution on the Phase Formation and Electrochemical Properties of La1-xSrxMnO3-δ Perovskites

La1-xSrxMnO3-δ (x = 0, 0.15, 0.30 and 0.50) perovskite powders were synthesized by a modified Pechini sol-gel method. Differential thermal analysis revealed that heat treatment at approximately 800 °C is required for complete formation of the perovskite phase. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the as-synthesized p...

Sol–gel synthesis and structural-magnetic properties of Ba2-xAxFeMoO6 (A = Ag, Sm): effects of partial A-site substitution

Double perovskite oxides are promising candidates for spintronic and magnetic applications because their magnetic properties can be effectively tailored through ionic substitution. In this work, the effects of non-magnetic Ag+ and magnetic rare-earth Sm3+ substitution at the Ba site of Ba2FeMoO6 were systematically com...

Composition–structure–activity relationships in CuxCo1−xFe2O4 spinel ferrites for visible-light photo-Fenton degradation of rhodamine B

Although Cu-substituted CoFe2O4 ferrites have been extensively investigated as visible-light photo-Fenton catalysts, the physicochemical basis of their composition-dependent activity maximum remains insufficiently resolved. Herein, a systematic CuxCo1−xFe2O4 series (x = 0–0.5) was synthesized within a single spinel-fer...

Mixed Triple-Cation Tin and Lead Bromide Perovskites: Bridging Atomic Structure, Lattice Dynamics, and Stability

Tin-based halide perovskites are promising lead-free alternatives for optoelectronic applications, yet their practical implementation is limited by the facile oxidation of Sn(II) to Sn(IV), which compromises environmental stability. Inspired by the success of triple-cation engineering in Pb-based perovskites, we expl...
