The Role of Group Counseling in Enhancing Academic Resilience in the Hybrid Learning Environments

Aug 2026 · ICEETE Conference Series · 0 citations

Abstract

Hybrid learning has transformed higher education by increasing flexibility and accessibility, yet it has also introduced substantial psychological challenges, including academic stress, digital fatigue, social isolation, and difficulties in self-regulated learning. These challenges highlight the need for effective interventions that strengthen students' academic resilience. This study aims to synthesize the existing literature on the role of group counseling in enhancing academic resilience among university students within hybrid learning environments. A narrative literature review was conducted using Google Scholar as the primary search engine to identify relevant publications published between 2019 and 2026. The initial search identified 24 relevant studies, of which 13 were selected as the primary evidence base for thematic synthesis, while the remaining studies were used to support conceptual interpretation during the discussion. The review identified three major findings. First, hybrid learning generates multidimensional psychological challenges that may hinder students' well-being and academic engagement. Second, academic resilience consistently emerged as the primary protective factor enabling students to adapt to these challenges. Third, group counseling strengthens academic resilience through shared therapeutic mechanisms, including cognitive restructuring, psychological resource development, and supportive group dynamics, rather than through the superiority of any single counseling approach. These findings suggest that preventive and developmental group counseling programs should be integrated into higher education counseling services to better support students' psychological adaptation and academic success in increasingly digital learning environments.
