Industry 4.0 Technologies, Adaptive Capabilities, and Organizational Innovativeness as Drivers of Resilience and Sustainable Performance: The Moderating Role of Managerial Cognition

Abstract
This study investigates the impact of Industry 4.0 technologies on sustainable performance within the Chinese industrial context. Specifically, it examines the mediating roles of adaptive capabilities, organizational innovativeness, and organizational resilience, alongside the moderating role of managerial cognition, within an integrated conceptual framework grounded in the resource‐based view (RBV) and dynamic capability theory (DCT). A quantitative cross‐sectional survey design was employed, collecting data from 356 managers and executives across Chinese manufacturing and technology‐intensive firms. Structured questionnaires utilizing validated scales from prior literature were administered, achieving a response rate of 29.7%. Data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS‐SEM) via ADANCO 2.3. All seven hypothesized relationships were empirically supported. Industry 4.0 technologies positively influenced adaptive capabilities and organizational innovativeness, both of which strengthened organizational resilience, which subsequently enhanced sustainable performance. Two serial mediation pathways were confirmed, and managerial cognition significantly moderated the technology‐capability relationships. This study makes an original contribution by integrating serial mediation and moderation within a unified Industry 4.0 resilience framework, specifically contextualized within Chinese industrial firms. The findings offer actionable guidance for managers and policymakers seeking to leverage digital technologies to build organizational resilience and achieve long‐term sustainable performance.
Organizations increasingly recognize that achieving sustainable organizational performance requires more than possessing strategic resources; it depends on their effective transformation into innovation capabilities. Drawing upon the Resource-Based View (RBV), Natural Resource-Based View (NRBV), and Dynamic Capability Theory (DCT), this study develops and tests an integrated framework examining the effects of Knowledge Management Capabilities (KMC) and Sustainable Intellectual Capital (SIC) on Sustainable Organizational Performance (SOP) through the mediating role of Sustainable Innovation (SI) and the moderating role of Organizational Resilience (OR). Data were collected from 267 managers across diverse organizations and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings reveal that KMC and SIC do not exert significant direct effects on SOP; instead, both variables significantly enhance sustainable innovation, which subsequently improves sustainable organizational performance. The mediation analysis indicates that sustainable innovation fully mediates the relationships between KMC, SIC, and SOP. Furthermore, organizational resilience significantly strengthens the positive relationship between sustainable innovation and sustainable organizational performance, demonstrating that resilient organizations are better positioned to convert sustainability-oriented innovations into superior performance outcomes. By integrating RBV, NRBV, and DCT into a sequential capability-building framework, this study extends existing theory by demonstrating that sustainability-oriented organizational resources create value only when transformed into innovation capabilities under resilient organizational conditions. The findings also provide practical guidance for managers by emphasizing investments in knowledge management, sustainable intellectual capital, innovation capabilities, and organizational resilience as complementary drivers of long-term sustainable performance.

The transition toward Industry 5.0 has fundamentally reshaped organizational priorities by emphasizing human-centricity, sustainability, resilience, and intelligent collaboration between advanced technologies and human capabilities. Within this context, transformational leadership has emerged as a strategic driver of organizational adaptability and long-term competitiveness. This study investigates the direct and indirect effects of transformational leadership on organizational resilience by examining the mediating roles of knowledge management capability and employee innovative behavior. A quantitative research design was employed using a survey of employees from organizations undergoing digital transformation across multiple industrial sectors. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to evaluate both measurement and structural models. The findings reveal that transformational leadership significantly enhances knowledge management capability, stimulates employee innovative behavior, and directly strengthens organizational resilience. Knowledge management capability also exerts a significant positive influence on employee innovative behavior and organizational resilience, confirming its strategic role in facilitating organizational learning and adaptive capacity. Furthermore, employee innovative behavior significantly contributes to organizational resilience by enabling continuous improvement, creative problem-solving, and organizational flexibility. Mediation analysis demonstrates that knowledge management capability and employee innovative behavior partially mediate the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational resilience, indicating that leadership effectiveness is reinforced through organizational knowledge processes and innovation-oriented employee behavior. These findings contribute to the growing Industry 5.0 literature by integrating leadership, knowledge management, innovation, and resilience into a comprehensive conceptual framework. The study offers practical implications for managers seeking to develop resilient organizations by fostering transformational leadership, strengthening knowledge management systems, and encouraging employee innovation to achieve sustainable organizational performance in increasingly dynamic and digitally driven business environments.

As firms increasingly rely on external partnerships to navigate complex and volatile environments, understanding the distinct pathways through which such collaborations may relate to resilience has become essential. However, despite growing interest in interorganizational collaboration, limited research has explicitly examined how university–industry collaboration relates to organizational resilience, as prior studies have predominantly focused on innovation and performance-related consequences. This study examines whether university–industry collaboration is associated with organizational resilience, conceptualized as a micro-foundation of sustainable development. Specifically, it investigates the mediating role of relationship quality within the university–industry collaboration and resilience nexus and the moderating effect of institutional alignment. The proposed research model and hypotheses were tested using survey data collected from 220 firms operating in science and technology parks (STPs) in Türkiye through partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS. The results indicate that university-industry collaboration exhibits a significant association with organizational resilience, which is also linked to long-term sustainability at both firm and systemic levels. Furthermore, relationship quality serves as a distinct mediating pathway linking university–industry collaboration with organizational resilience. In addition, institutional alignment shows a significant moderating role in this relationship, such that higher alignment between university and industry partners strengthens the collaboration–resilience linkage. This study offers an early empirical attempt to conceptualize university–industry collaboration as an external driver associated with organizational resilience while delineating the distinct processes of mediation and moderation. Drawing on institutional theory and relational coordination theory, the findings elucidate the distinct institutional and relational pathways through which collaborations are associated with organizational resilience. For managers and policymakers, the study underscores the importance of investing in high-quality relationships and institutional congruence to better leverage collaborative partnerships for sustainable organizational resilience.
This study investigates how organizations in Vietnam achieve sustainable performance through green knowledge management (GKM), digital tools (DKM), leadership and culture (LOC), and institutional support (INS). Drawing on the Knowledge‐Based View, Dynamic Capabilities Theory, Institutional Theory, and Leadership Theory, we develop and test a model in which innovation capabilities (IC) mediate the link between organizational enablers and sustainability outcomes. Rather than treating these theories as interchangeable explanations, the study maps each theoretical lens onto a distinct capability‐building mechanism: knowledge conversion, dynamic reconfiguration, behavioral and cultural activation, and legitimacy‐enabled institutional support. Survey data from 350 firms across the manufacturing and service sectors were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). Results show that all dimensions of GKM, DKM, LOC, and INS significantly enhance IC. Knowledge application emerged as the strongest GKM predictor, while AI‐based platforms were the most influential among DKM. Process eco‐innovation was the most powerful driver of sustainable performance across financial, environmental, and social dimensions. Mediation tests confirmed IC as a key mechanism translating organizational resources into sustainability outcomes. The study integrates multiple theoretical perspectives and validates the mediating role of eco‐innovation. It contributes to Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management research by explaining how firms convert sustainability‐oriented knowledge, digital tools, leadership practices, and institutional pressures into innovation capabilities that generate triple‐bottom‐line performance. From a practical perspective, the findings guide managers in leveraging green knowledge, digital tools, and leadership culture, and inform policymakers about the role of incentives, regulations, and certifications in supporting sustainability transformation.

This study investigates the impact of responsible production and consumption (RPC) on organizational resilience in the textile sector of Pakistan, with sustainable supply chain integration (SSCI) and dynamic capabilities as mediators, and digital transformation as a moderator. Drawing on dynamic capabilities theory (DCT), the research proposes a conceptual framework in which RPC, as a strategic sustainability resource, enhances resilience directly and indirectly through capability- and network-based mechanisms, with digital adoption strengthening these effects. Data were collected from 311 respondents across different managerial levels, including owners/top management, middle management, and operational managers, drawn from major textile hubs in Sindh and Punjab. The study employed a stratified sampling design with access-based respondent selection to ensure representation across managerial levels and firm categories within the textile sector. Analyses were conducted using PLS-SEM and Hayes’ PROCESS models, including 5000 bootstrap samples for mediation testing. Findings reveal that RPC significantly enhances organizational resilience, with both SSCI (β = 0.18) and dynamic capabilities (β = 0.16) serving as partial mediators. Digital transformation positively moderates the relationship between RPC and organizational resilience (β = 0.14), indicating that firms with higher digital adoption leverage responsible production practices more effectively to build resilience. The findings extend DCT by identifying sustainability-oriented resources, network-level integration, capability activation, and digital readiness as interconnected mechanisms and boundary conditions underlying resilience development. The study is significant for emerging economy manufacturing because it demonstrates how textile firms can combine responsible production, supply chain integration, adaptive capabilities, and digitalization to strengthen resilience under volatile conditions. However, the cross-sectional and single-country design limits causal inference and generalizability. Future research should employ longitudinal, cross-country, multisource, and objective performance-based approaches to further validate and extend the proposed framework.

This study empirically investigated the effect of digital transformation on innovation performance in manufacturing firms and examined the mediating role of absorptive capacity and the moderating role of R&D human capital. As manufacturing industries increasingly experience rapid technological changes driven by artificial intelligence (AI), big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and smart manufacturing systems, digital transformation has emerged as a critical strategic factor for enhancing organizational competitiveness and innovation capability. However, prior studies have suggested that the adoption of digital technologies alone does not necessarily guarantee sustainable innovation performance. Therefore, this study attempted to explain the relationship between digital transformation and innovation performance from the perspectives of organizational learning and human capital. Data were collected from 402 employees working in Korean manufacturing firms through online and offline surveys. The collected data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SPSS 29.0 and SmartPLS 4.0. The results indicated that digital transformation had a significant positive effect on innovation performance and absorptive capacity. In addition, absorptive capacity positively influenced innovation performance and partially mediated the relationship between digital transformation and innovation performance. Furthermore, R&D human capital significantly moderated the relationship between digital transformation and innovation performance, indicating that the positive effect of digital transformation on innovation performance was stronger in firms with higher levels of R&D human capital. The findings suggest that digital transformation contributes to innovation performance not only through technological efficiency but also through enhanced organizational learning and knowledge utilization capabilities. This study provides academic implications by integrating digital transformation, absorptive capacity, and R&D human capital into a comprehensive research framework. In addition, it offers practical implications for manufacturing firms by emphasizing the importance of organizational learning systems and the development of R&D personnel capabilities alongside digital technology investment.
