The Transformation of Arabic Language Assessment: A Systematic Literature Review of Technology-Enhanced Assessment (2021–2026)

This study aims to analyze the development of Technology-Enhanced Assessment (TEA) in Arabic language learning from 2021 to 2026, particularly the shift from conventional evaluation to digital and AI-based assessment. This study employed a qualitative research approach using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR). A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach using the PRISMA framework to identify, screen, evaluate, and synthesize relevant studies obtained from Google Scholar, Garuda, and DOAJ databases. From 75 records identified through database searches, 11 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria and were thematically analyzed to examine trends, challenges, and implications of technology-enhanced assessment in Arabic language learning. The findings indicate that Arabic language assessment has undergone a significant shift toward more interactive, adaptive, and student-centered evaluation through the implementation of gamified, web-based, multimedia, authentic, and AI-supported assessment. Gamified assessment emerged as the dominant trend due to its effectiveness in increasing students’ motivation and participation. In contrast, AI-based assessment reflects the growing integration of intelligent technologies in educational evaluation. However, TEA implementation still faces challenges related to digital literacy, technological infrastructure, technical limitations, and the validity of AI-supported assessment systems. Therefore, integrating technology into Arabic language assessment requires pedagogical readiness, digital competence, and assessment literacy to support more meaningful, competency-oriented learning practices.

Research Mapping of Arabic Reading Skills: A Scopus-Based Bibliometric Analysis, Systematic Review, and Pedagogical Implications for Arabic Language Teaching

Research on Arabic reading skills has increased substantially in response to the growing demand for Arabic proficiency in academic, religious, and foreign language education; however, existing studies remain fragmented and lack an integrated overview. Bibliometric analysis combined with a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) provides a comprehensive framework for mapping publication trends, collaboration networks, research themes, and knowledge gaps. This study aims to analyze global research trends on Arabic reading skills during 2016–2025 and identify their pedagogical implications for Arabic as a Foreign Language (AFL) instruction. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the study analyzed 105 Scopus-indexed journal articles selected through the PRISMA protocol. Data were collected from the Scopus database and examined using VOSviewer through co-occurrence, co-authorship, citation, and thematic analyses. The findings reveal a significant increase in publications after 2019, five dominant research clusters, and limited international collaboration, with notable gaps in higher education and non-Arab AFL contexts. The study concludes that Arabic reading research has become increasingly interdisciplinary but requires stronger international collaboration, broader contextual research, and more integrative pedagogical frameworks to support future Arabic language teaching and research. Penelitian mengenai keterampilan membaca bahasa Arab mengalami peningkatan signifikan seiring meningkatnya kebutuhan penguasaan bahasa Arab dalam konteks akademik, keagamaan, dan bahasa asing, namun kajian yang ada masih terfragmentasi dan belum memberikan gambaran yang komprehensif. Analisis bibliometrik yang dipadukan dengan Systematic Literature Review (SLR) memberikan kerangka untuk memetakan tren publikasi, kolaborasi, tema penelitian, dan kesenjangan riset. Penelitian ini bertujuan memetakan perkembangan penelitian global tentang keterampilan membaca bahasa Arab periode 2016–2025 serta mengidentifikasi implikasinya bagi pembelajaran Arabic as a Foreign Language (AFL). Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan analisis bibliometrik dan SLR terhadap 105 artikel jurnal terindeks Scopus yang dipilih melalui protokol PRISMA. Data dikumpulkan dari basis data Scopus dan dianalisis menggunakan VOSviewer melalui analisis co-occurrence, co-authorship, sitasi, dan tema. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan publikasi sejak 2019, terbentuknya lima klaster tema utama, serta masih terbatasnya kolaborasi internasional dan penelitian pada konteks pendidikan tinggi serta AFL di negara non-Arab. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa kajian keterampilan membaca bahasa Arab berkembang menjadi bidang interdisipliner, namun memerlukan kolaborasi global, penelitian yang lebih kontekstual, dan kerangka pedagogis yang lebih integratif.

A Systematic Literature Review of Digital Media in Enhancing Arabic Listening Comprehension

This study aims to map the use of digital media in enhancing Arabic listening skills and to identify research limitations in related studies published over the last five years (2022–2026). The study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method following the PRISMA guidelines to ensure a systematic and transparent process of literature selection and synthesis. Data were collected from three databases, namely Garuda, DOAJ, and ERIC. A total of 150 articles were initially identified, of which 13 met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate that digital media used in Arabic listening instruction can be classified into four categories: audio-based media, audio visual media, Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL), and Learning Management Systems (LMS). The review further reveals that audio visual media and MALL based applications demonstrate more consistent effectiveness in improving listening skills due to their integration of multimodal elements, interactivity, and structured feedback. However, the reviewed studies still exhibit several methodological limitations, including small sample sizes, short intervention periods, and research designs that lack sufficient rigor. Therefore, future studies should develop experimental designs, conduct longitudinal investigations, and perform comparative analyzes across different media types to strengthen the empirical evidence supporting technology enhanced Arabic listening pedagogy.

Integrated language and computer laboratory model in efficiency of arabic language practicum and digital hadith studies: A systematic literature review

Purpose - This study aims to formulate an integrated laboratory model that combines the capabilities of language laboratories and computer laboratories to optimize practicum efficiency in the fields of Arabic Language Learning and Digital Hadith Studies. Design/methods/approach - This study adopted a qualitative Systematic Literature Review (SLR) following the PRISMA framework. Literature was collected from Crossref and Google Scholar through the Publish or Perish application. Of the 1,200 records identified, 15 relevant journal articles published between 2015 and 2025 met the selection criteria and were analyzed using content analysis and thematic synthesis. Findings - Based on the thematic synthesis, this study formulated three adaptive laboratory integration models: (1) the Hybrid Model, which integrates Hadith text corpus computing with oral communication competencies; (2) the Research Incubator Model, which positions the laboratory as a collaborative interdisciplinary research environment based on digital datasets; and (3) the Multilingual Accessibility Model, which focuses on the development of digital religious products, such as Hadith software applications. Research implication/limitation - Conceptually, the implementation of these three integration models has the potential to minimize operational redundancy and enhance instructional support capacity. However, this study is limited by its reliance on metadata obtained exclusively from Crossref and Google Scholar, without incorporating other globally indexed high-impact databases such as Scopus or Web of Science. Consequently, further empirical validation is required before large-scale implementation can be recommended. Originality/value - This study contributes a novel conceptual framework for integrating laboratory facilities that bridges applied linguistics and digital religious text studies. This aspect of academic governance remains relatively underexplored within conventional laboratory models that operate as separate and independent units.

Natural language processing for Arabic poetry analysis and generation: a systematic review

Poetry is a unique form of expression valued for its role in preserving cultural heritage. Analyzing Arabic poetry is time-consuming and requires a high level of linguistic expertise; therefore, computational methods are useful, as they enable large-scale, extensive, and systematic analysis of poetry, thereby improving its accessibility for researchers and students. This article presents the first systematic review of natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) approaches for Arabic poetry. It addresses the question of which research tasks, methodologies, datasets, and evaluation approaches have been applied to Arabic poetry, and which trends and research gaps can be identified in the existing literature. In accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), the author conducted an exhaustive search across six major academic databases (ACL Anthology, IEEE Xplore, ACM, SpringerLink, Science Direct, and Google Scholar) for relevant studies published between January 2010 and May 2025. Eligibility was evaluated in several phases, and re-examination was conducted to ensure accuracy. The author performed task-level categorization, extracted key characteristics from each study, synthesized the findings, and presented them in tables and figures to highlight the main trends and research gaps in the literature. This study presents the first structured task-level synthesis of the field, identifying methodological trends, detecting evaluation inconsistencies, and highlighting research gaps that have not been critically consolidated before. Furthermore, the author assembled a comprehensive collection of available datasets and resources to promote standardized assessment.

Research Trends in Developing Communicative Arabic Teaching Materials through QR Code Integration and Monopoly-Based Gamification: A Systematic Literature Review

This study aims to analyze research trends in the development of communicative Arabic teaching materials integrated with digital technology. The review also examines how QR Code technology and gamification have been incorporated within this broader development trend. The method used is Systematic Literature Review with reference to the PRISMA procedure which includes the identification, selection, eligibility, and inclusion stages. The data source was obtained through national and international scientific articles published in the 2022–2026 range and according to the topics of communicative teaching materials, digital technology-based learning, and gamification of Arabic language learning. The results of the study have shown the development of Arabic teaching materials still tends to lead to the integration of digital technology to increase interactivity and student involvement. In addition, a communicative approach has proven to be an important foundation in supporting the mastery of Arabic language skills in a contextual manner. Furthermore, the application of gamification, especially through educational games such as monopoly, shows significant potential in increasing learning motivation and active participation of students. However, there are still research gaps related to the simultaneous integration of communicative teaching materials, QR Code technology, and monopoly games in one complete learning design. Therefore, this research provides important implications as a conceptual basis in the development of innovative Arabic teaching materials that are able to integrate communicative approaches, digital technology, and gamification to improve the quality of Arabic language learning.
