Evaluating the Role of Advanced Energy-Efficient Technologies in Promoting Sustainability in Nigeria's Construction Industry

Abstract

This study evaluates the impact of advanced energy-efficient technologies on sustainability within the Nigerian construction sector, focusing on their effects on energy consumption, cost reduction, environmental benefits, and social impacts. A quantitative research approach was employed, using structured questionnaires administered to a total of 123 construction professionals across 150 infrastructure projects in Nigeria. The respondents included architects (n=30), civil and structural engineers (n=38), project managers (n=32), and other construction specialists such as quantity surveyors and support staff (n=23). The analysis included descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis to evaluate the relationships between technology adoption and sustainability outcomes. The results indicate strong consensus among respondents that energy-efficient technologies lead to reduced energy consumption (mean=4.2, SD=0.83) and long-term cost savings (mean=4.0, SD=0.92). Environmental benefits were rated highly (mean=4.3, SD=0.68), while social impacts were perceived as less significant (mean=3.7, SD=0.75). ANOVA results revealed statistically significant differences in perceptions based on professional roles (F(3,119)=5.24, p=0.002), with architects showing the strongest agreement regarding the effectiveness of these technologies. Multiple regression analysis identified perceived cost savings (β=0.34, p<0.001) and environmental impact (β=0.29, p<0.001) as the most influential predictors of technology adoption, followed by stakeholder awareness (β=0.22, p<0.001) and social benefits (β=0.15, p=0.003). The model accounted for 76% of the variance in adoption rates (R²=0.76), suggesting robust explanatory power. These findings highlight the critical role of advanced energy-efficient technologies in promoting sustainability in the Nigerian construction sector. They also emphasize the need for targeted educational programs and policy reforms to improve stakeholder awareness, especially of the social and community benefits, to drive broader and more inclusive adoption.

Procurement Practices and Sustainability in the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), South-East

Nigeria’s electricity sector continues to face major challenges due to aging infrastructure, which increases operational costs and reduces overall efficiency. This study aimed to assess how procurement practices influence sustainability within the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), South-East, with a specific focus on the effect of green technology on environmentally friendly products. Using a quantitative correlational design, 148 surveys were distributed to staff across Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo states, of which 133 were completed and used for analysis. Pearson correlation and descriptive statistics were employed to test the hypotheses. The results revealed a very strong and statistically significant positive correlation between green technology and eco-friendly products (r = .994, n = 132, p < .01), indicating that advancements in green technology account for a large proportion of changes in environmental product outcomes. Based on these findings, the study recommends that NERC strengthen procurement policies by prioritizing vendors who provide certified green technologies and environmentally sustainable materials.

The impact of energy-efficient architecture as a driver of economic innovation and fiscal resilience in Ghana

This study aimed to investigate energy-efficient architectural design as a strategic instrument of economic policy and innovation, repositioning it to address Ghana’s energy crisis by driving economic innovation and fiscal resilience within the building sector. The survey of 120 registered architects in Ghana (quantitative survey) produced 72 valid responses (60.0% response rate). The methods applied included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, multiple linear regression and principal component analysis. Factor analysis indicated that there were two main innovation themes Building Envelope/Orientation (64.4% of variance) and Site Condition decisions (9.2% more variance) with good scale reliability (Cronbachs 0.90). The multi-dimensional outcome construct was confirmed with energy performance items loading on one factor, which explained 80.5% of variance. Five predictors of energy performance were identified by regression, which accounted 81.7% of the variance of energy performance; with passive solar (β = 0.510), natural ventilation (β=0.373), site temperature (β=0.315), daylighting (β=0.284), and site shading (β= =0.175) for a standardised regression coefficient. The main barriers are economic and informational: absence of public knowledge (mean=3.20/4), and client budget (mean = 3.00/4), which are considered to be high barriers. Key conclusions showed that design innovations have the potential to save 25-50 per cent of energy loads in buildings and are also related to productivity of labour, 5-15 per cent. Scenario analysis projected that, with widespread implementation, annual economic benefits would reach 150-300 million dollars, comprising direct fiscal savings (25-50 million), productivity enhancement (15-30 million), green construction investment mobilised (100-200 million), and reduced fuel imports (10-20 million) offsetting 7-13 per cent of the yearly energy deficit

Assessing Construction Professionals’ Perception of the Effectiveness of Sustainable Building Technologies and Design Strategies for Enhancing Building Energy Efficiency

This study assessed the perceived effectiveness of sustainable building technologies and design strategies in improving building energy efficiency within the South African construction industry. Adopting a quantitative research approach, data were collected from 118 construction professionals in the Free State Province, South Africa, using a structured survey questionnaire administered through purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS, employing descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The findings indicate that all investigated technologies and design strategies positively contribute to building energy efficiency and are significantly interrelated. The strong correlations among these technologies, supported by PCA results explaining 76.85% of the total variance through two principal components, suggest that sustainable building technologies are most effective when implemented as an integrated system rather than as isolated interventions. This implies that integrating energy-efficient technologies such as passive design strategies, renewable energy systems, green infrastructure, and intelligent building management systems can yield greater energy performance benefits than deploying individual technologies independently. These findings offer practical guidance for construction professionals and policymakers aiming to promote energy-efficient buildings. While limited to the Free State Province, the study provides valuable empirical evidence on sustainable building technologies within the South African context.

The Impact of Building Technology on Promoting Sustainability in Madrid

This study examined the role of advanced building technologies in promoting urban sustainability through a qualitative case study of the Madrid Nuevo Norte project in Madrid, Spain. The research investigated how energy-efficient building envelopes, smart energy management systems, renewable energy technologies, and mobility-integrated urban planning contribute to environmental, social, and economic sustainability outcomes. The study adopted a qualitative case study methodology based on secondary data obtained from peer-reviewed academic literature, urban planning reports, policy documents, and sustainability indicators published between 2019 and 2024. The analytical framework was structured around the three pillars of sustainability and supported by the concept of urban metabolism to evaluate the relationship between building technologies and urban systems. The findings indicate that advanced building technologies contribute to reduced operational energy demand, lower projected carbon emissions, improved thermal comfort, enhanced mobility integration, and increased long-term economic efficiency. The study also demonstrates that the Madrid Nuevo Norte project aligns with the principles of Sustainable Development Goals 7, 11, and 13 by integrating climate-responsive design, renewable energy systems, and sustainable mobility strategies. However, the research identified limitations related to the absence of field-based performance monitoring and user satisfaction assessment. The study contributes to sustainable urban design literature by linking building-scale technologies with city-scale sustainability performance through the urban metabolism perspective.

Sustainable Practices of Multinational Construction Companies, Lagos, Nigeria

This study evaluated the sustainable practices of multinational construction companies (MCCs) in Lagos State, Nigeria, with a view to promoting sustainable development and achieving a sustainable future. A total of 150 structured questionnaires were administered to selected multinational construction companies, yielding a response rate of 47%. The collected data were analysed using frequency distribution and mean score techniques to classify respondents’ perceptions of sustainability practices. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was employed to determine significant differences in respondents’ opinions, while factor analysis was used to identify the underlying factors influencing sustainable practices. The findings revealed a high level of engagement by multinational construction companies in sustainable practices, including corporate social responsibility and ethical practices, installation of energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems, reduction in the use of hazardous materials on construction sites, minimization of construction waste, and energy conservation in company operations. The study further identified cost effectiveness and financial gains, stakeholders’ understanding, access to sustainable technologies, operational and economic considerations, and corporate image and value delivery as the most influential factors driving sustainability adoption. The study concluded that multinational construction companies in Lagos State are actively implementing practices that contribute to environmental sustainability and the well-being of future generations. However, financial and cost-related constraints remain significant barriers to the effective implementation of sustainable practices within the construction sector.

Fourth Industrial Revolution Technologies in the Nigerian Construction Industry: Professionals' Perceptions and Potential Benefits

Purpose: This study investigated 4IR technologies in the Nigerian construction sector to improve construction processes and outcomes. The specific objectives of the study are to determine the construction professionals’ perceptions on adoption of 4IR technologies in Nigeria. A survey research design was employed for this study in Lagos State. Design/Methodology/Approach: A convenience sampling technique was employed to select a sample of 80 respondents because there was no documented list of construction professionals (i.e., architects, builders, quantity surveyors, engineers, estate surveyors and valuers, and town planners) who use 4IR technologies. Questionnaires were administered to the respondents, and the data were analysed with frequency, percentage, standard deviation, mean, rank and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Research Limitation: The relatively modest sample size of 80 respondents, while adequate for exploratory analysis, may constrain the study's statistical power and limit the extent to which the findings can be extrapolated across regions, organisational contexts, or professional sub-groups within the Nigerian construction industry. Findings: The findings revealed a need for skilled workers and infrastructure readiness for the adoption of 4IR, while the topmost benefit of 4IR is the enhancement of project speed. Practical Implication: Adoption is likely to enhance operational efficiency, improve productivity, and strengthen the sector's capacity to respond to evolving industry demands and global competitiveness pressures. Social Implications: Investment in digital infrastructure could further consolidate this trajectory, enabling the sector to fully realise the transformative benefits of 4IR technologies, including improved quality outcomes, reduced inefficiencies, and enhanced sustainability practices. Originality / Value: This study contributes to the body of knowledge by establishing the construction industry's propensity to integrate 4IR and confirming the issues that could hinder its implementation, such as a shortage of skilled workers and basic infrastructure.
