Abstract
This paper takes the differences between Chinese and English polite speech acts as the research starting point, under the theoretical framework of cross-cultural pragmatics and second language acquisition, adopts the method of comparative analysis and case analysis, selects the typical corpus in the spring of a small town and my fair lady, makes a contextual investigation on the speech acts of invitation, assertion, apology and gratitude, and systematically discusses the differences in polite expression between Chinese and English and its teaching significance. The study found that although Chinese and English politeness speech acts follow similar pragmatic principles, they show significant differences under the influence of cultural values and face concepts: the Chinese context emphasizes collectivism and tends to use implicit, modest and indirect expressions. In the English context, individualism and individual rights are emphasized. The expression is more direct and depends on explicit politeness markers. These differences can easily lead to pragmatic failures in Chinese communication by native English learners. Based on this, this paper proposes to improve learners’ Politeness pragmatic competence and intercultural communicative competence by optimizing the content of teaching materials, introducing an authentic corpus and strengthening strategy teaching.
The present article examines politeness strategies of Chinese diplomacy as the culturally particular system of semantic and pragmatic means intended to ensure smooth international communication. The focus is on the cross-cultural character of politeness strategies and on the challenges of rendering Chinese diplomatic tone markers into English and Russian. The problem is urgent because there is still a limited number of comparative studies that cover lexical-semantic, pragmatic and other dimensions of translation of politeness in Chinese diplomatic discourse, which is particularly relevant in the context of globalization.
The methodology of the research includes conceptual-pragmatic analysis of contemporary Chinese formal diplomatic papers (2019-2025) and comparative analysis of their English and Russian equivalents. The analysis reveals that the most significant structural, semantic, and pragmatic features of Chinese diplomatic politeness are honorific nominations, euphemisms, hedging, and indirect constructions. The analysis shows that literal translation results in the loss of meaning and pragmatics particularly when the transfer involves culturally-specific aspects of politeness such as those pertaining to harmony, hierarchy and relational empathy. According to the results obtained, Chinese diplomatic politeness is a particular communicative model, which is focused on the preservation of harmony, hierarchy and face in international relations. The outcomes of this study can be applied to develop translation theory and intercultural communication by clarifying the cultural rationale of Chinese diplomatic discourse and giving useful instructions to translator education and cross-cultural adaptation of politeness strategies.

This article examines the influence of English on Vietnamese in the context of globalisation, with particular attention to lexical borrowing, code-switching, digital discourse, and language attitudes. Grounded in contact linguistics, sociolinguistic theory, and language ideology studies, the paper uses a qualitative design that combines naturalistic observation of public and digital language practices with a systematic review of recent scholarship on English-Vietnamese contact. The analysis shows that English influence is most visible in the lexical domain, especially in technology, education, business, and popular culture. English-Vietnamese code-switching is also widespread in youth-oriented and digitally mediated communication, where it serves pragmatic functions such as emphasis, brevity, and topic framing, as well as social functions such as identity performance and in-group solidarity. Syntactic and phonological influences appear more limited and register-specific, although Englishinfluenced discourse markers, passive constructions, and loanword pronunciation patterns are increasingly noticeable among proficient bilingual users. The study further indicates that attitudes toward English influence remain ambivalent: younger speakers often treat bilingual hybridity as a sign of modernity and global identity, while purist concerns persist in public and institutional discourse. The paper concludes with implications for Vietnamese language policy and English education.

Domestication and foreignization are two common strategies for translators to deal with cultural differences. Based on Berman’s translation ethics and twelve deformations, this paper takes Bai Juyi’s the Everlasting Regret (selected sentences) as the object of study, adopts close reading and comparative analysis, and selects the English versions of Xu Yuanchong, Xu Zhongjie and W. J. B. Fletcher for comparative analysis, focusing on the different degrees of domestication and foreignization in the aspects of word choice, syntax, rhetorical organization, cultural transmission and so on, as well as the effects caused by these differences. The study found that in the English translation of classical Chinese poetry, in addition to the necessary domestication adjustment, the translator should retain the cultural background and aesthetic logic of the original poem as much as possible, so that the translation can achieve the purpose of conveying the cultural nature of this special literary genre. Therefore, in the English translation, foreignization enjoys ethical priority.

This study examines the socio-cognitive and pragmatic organization of politeness and address forms in the speech of dialectal linguistic personalities in the Samarkand Region of Uzbekistan. The empirical basis is field material collected from 112 native speakers in Samarkand city and several districts of the region between 2024 and 2026 through participant observation and spontaneous everyday interaction. The analysis is explicitly qualitative and does not make population-level frequency claims. The analysis integrates Karaulov’s three-level model of linguistic personality with pragmatic approaches to speech action, face, relational work, and culturally situated politeness. Three recurrent tendencies are identified. First, phonetic and formulaic reduction, including forms such as Somalaykum and Sobo‘, functions as an interactionally meaningful resource in familiar and informal settings, although reduction is treated as an association rather than a deterministic marker of social closeness. Second, politeness resources can be organized provisionally as a core-periphery field in which broadly shared etiquette formulae coexist with regionally salient forms such as aylansin, aylanay, and qoqindiq. Third, self-lowering expressions such as kamina and faqir contribute to relational positioning by elevating the addressee and indexing conventional social deference in culturally marked situations. The findings show that dialectal politeness is best understood as context-sensitive relational practice rather than as a fixed inventory of etiquette formulae. The study contributes qualitative evidence to Uzbek dialectology, pragmalinguistics, and research on linguistic personality while also identifying the need for future corpus-based work with fuller demographic metadata, verbatim interactional transcripts, and quantitative distributional analysis.

This study explored how national cultural values are represented in Chinese, Kazakh, and Russian advertising texts, considering the linguistic and cultural specifics of each language. The research analyzed six advertising cases from China and Kazakhstan, examining lexical, pragmatic, syntactic, stylistic, and cultural aspects. The interpretation was based on critical discourse analysis and Hofstede’s model of cultural dimensions. The findings highlight distinct cultural differences in advertising discourse. Chinese advertising shows high collectivism, femininity, power distance, and long-term orientation, using emotionally charged slogans, symbolism, and family values. Kazakh advertising features a rational approach, moderate emotional expression, high uncertainty avoidance, and a collectivist focus, combining national markers with global trends. Russian advertising uses pragmatic and emotionally evaluative rhetoric, moderate individualism, high uncertainty avoidance, and masculinity, reflected in imperatives, rational arguments, and metaphors. The linguistic analysis confirmed that vocabulary, pragmatics, syntax, and stylistic aspects reflect national cultural codes: Chinese slogans are emotionally gamified, Kazakh ads have a restrained tone, and Russian ads use militarized imagery. The study emphasizes that effective advertising in a globalized world must consider local cultural codes to avoid communicative barriers and enhance target audience impact. These findings are valuable for developing cross-cultural marketing strategies and improving global brand positioning.

As a form of knowledge dissemination aimed at the public, TED talks demonstrate a strong demand for interpersonal interaction within the framework of one-way output. This study, grounded in the interpersonal metafunction theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics, conducts a comparative analysis of TED talks in both Chinese and English versions. It focuses on three progressive levels-the Mood system, the Modality system, and the Appraisal system-examining the stance differentiation between Subject and Finite, the participatory mobilization of interrogative and imperative structures, the graduation features of modalization and modulation, and the attitudinal presentation of affect, judgement, and engagement resources. The results indicate that English talks rely more on explicit grammatical markers and clear graduation scales, with clear stance boundaries and stronger contraction of dialogic space; Chinese talks, on the other hand, convey interpersonal meaning through modal particles, subject ellipsis, and contextual inference, exhibiting higher stance fluidity and more inclusive and mitigating engagement strategies. The differences between the two languages in interpersonal metafunctional encoding are not a matter of superiority or inferiority, but rather different realization paths of their respective linguistic systems and cultural conventions under the same communicative goal.
