Anticipated growth in global commercial aviation poses significant challenges to maintaining established safety levels, particularly in aircraft maintenance. Safety Management Systems (SMS), as defined by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 19, provide a structured framework for hazard identification, risk management, and continuous improvement. This paper examines SMS implementation in the maintenance domain across key jurisdictions, highlighting regulatory variations: mandatory adoption in Europe through the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), voluntary compliance in the United States under the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and structured guidance in Australia via the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). These differences illustrate the complexity of achieving consistent global safety outcomes. The discussion underscores the need for systematic hazard identification, risk mitigation, and competency development to ensure effective SMS implementation. While ICAO standards offer a foundational schema, regional interpretations and gaps in practical guidance remain challenges. Strengthening SMS understanding and application is critical to sustaining safety performance amid rising operational demands.
Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are widely recognised as a key component of aviation decarbonisation strategies. However, the introduction of new fuels into a safety-critical aviation system requires robust evaluation to ensure compatibility with existing aircraft, engines and fuel infrastructure. This review examines...
Background: The aviation industry operates in a dynamic, highly regulated environment where human resource competence serves as a fundamental pillar for safety, security, and service quality. The global pandemic significantly impacted national aviation performance, leading to structural shifts such as early retirement...

In Europe, rulemaking on single pilot operations (SPO) and its transitional stage of extended minimum crew operations (eMCO) has fuelled pilot unions in activism opposing them worldwide. Two officially unnamed aircraft manufacturers approached the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to assess their operati...
Commercial aviation maintenance operates at the intersection of regulatory compliance, cost control, aircraft availability, human performance, and rapidly changing technology. This literature review synthesizes established aviation safety and maintenance research through Sociotechnical Systems Theory across five recurr...

The global aviation system is undergoing a data-centric digital transformation under ICAO’s GANP and ASBU framework. In aviation safety management, ICAO Annex 19 and Doc 9859 provide the foundation for SMS, while Doc 10159 emphasizes data-driven Safety Intelligence (SI). However, essential data related to flight operat...
