Edge AI Empowering Real-Time Decision-Making and Autonomous Defense Operations in Smart Warfare

Sep 2026 · Advances in computational intelligence and robotics book series · 5 references

Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence edge computing, and autonomous systems is transforming the nature of modern warfare. Traditional defense operations, which relied heavily on centralized command structures and human decision-making, are increasingly being augmented by intelligent systems capable of sensing, analyzing, and responding to dynamic battlefield conditions in real time. Among these technologies, Edge AI has emerged as a critical enabler of smart warfare by allowing data processing and AI inference to occur directly on deployed platforms rather than relying on distant cloud infrastructures. This chapter explores the role of Edge AI in defense operations, with particular emphasis on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous surveillance systems and intelligent reconnaissance platforms. It further examines the use of Edge AI for applications such as target recognition, battlefield situational awareness, autonomous navigation, mission execution, and decentralized decision-making.

The impact of agile practices on communication in software development

The study shows that agile practices improve both informal and formal communication, but indicates that, in larger development situations involving multiple external stakeholders, a mismatch of adequate communication mechanisms can sometimes even hinder the communication.

What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us

Jennifer Neville did not want to go into computer science—but that’s exactly where she landed. Neville discusses the starts and stops that led to her professional sweet spot and her work identifying “surprising failures” making it hard for AI to handle complexity.  The post What AI gets wrong and what failure teaches us appeared first on Microsoft Research.
