Emerging Edge Intelligence and Next-Generation Communication Technologies for Secure and Sustainable Intelligent Transportation Systems

Sep 2026 · Advances in computational intelligence and robotics book series · 58 references

Abstract

The advancement of AI, IoT, 6G, and UAV technologies is enabling Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to evolve into connected and autonomous mobility ecosystems. This chapter proposes an integrated framework for developing ITS and discusses how EdgeAI enables low-latency and privacy-aware decision-making by integrating 6G-based VANETs, V2X communication, IoT sensing, and UAV-assisted networks. It describes the different modes of V2X communication and VANET architecture. It also explores key AI techniques, including TinyML, Federated Learning, and Deep Reinforcement Learning, for real-time perception, resource optimization, and secure collaboration. The chapter examines EdgeAI and its critical role in ITS and further discusses several use cases where the proposed framework can be applied. Finally, it highlights the open issues and challenges involved in implementing secure, sustainable, and scalable smart transportation systems.
