Abstract

The growing global population necessitates improvements in agricultural water use productivity to ensure sustainable production systems. As agriculture accounts for the largest share of global freshwater consumption, enhancing agricultural productivity is essential for the long-term sustainability of water resources. In this context, the water footprint has emerged as a comprehensive indicator of water-use productivity, encompassing both direct and indirect consumption. This study investigates agricultural water-use productivity through a detailed water-footprint analysis, using Aydın Province in Türkiye as a case study. Results show that the total water footprint of crop production in the region is approximately 1238.86 million cubic meters (MCM). In livestock sector, it reaches 2069.73 MCM, with 1039.67 MCM attributable to animal husbandry and 1030.06 MCM to livestock-derived products. These findings underscore the substantial water demand of agricultural activities and highlight the urgent need to adopt efficient water management practices.

Improving Water Productivity and Reducing Water and Energy Consumption in Rice Production Through Natural Farming-Based Management Practices in Southern India

Natural farming (NF) has emerged as a promising agro-ecological tactic to enhance resource use and reduce dependence on synthetic agricultural inputs. However, comprehensive field-based evidence across diverse agro-climatic regions remains limited. This study assessed the effects of NF on water use, water and crop prod...

Water footprint and crop water productivity as decision-support indicators for water resources management and sustainable agricultural planning in Arauca, Colombia

Agricultural expansion in tropical frontier regions is increasing pressure on water resources and creating new challenges for sustainable water-use planning and management. In Colombia, however, local-scale assessments that integrate water-use indicators into agricultural decision-making remain limited, particularly in...

Optimizing Agricultural Water Productivity for Food Security Under Climate Change: Evidence from Algeria

Abstract Aim Agricultural water productivity is a critical determinant of food security in arid and semi-arid countries such as Algeria, where climate change is intensifying water scarcity and pressure on irrigation-dependent agriculture. This study assesses the current state of agricultural water productivity in Alger...

Comparative Assessment of the Water Footprint of Banana in Gujarat Using FAO CROPWAT 8.0 Model

Agriculture is a major consumer of freshwater, making efficient water management essential for sustainable crop production. Banana is an important water-intensive horticultural crop in Gujarat, where regional variations in climate and irrigation dependence can influence crop water use. This study evaluated the water fo...
