Lessons Learnt from the Implementation of an MPD Competency Program for MPD Field Personnel and Engineers/Specialists
Abstract
As Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) becomes more widely used, a robust, trackable, and scalable approach to competency assurance is required for MPD personnel. This paper presents lessons learned from implementing a structured MPD competency program aligned with the IADC Competence Assurance Guidelines. The program integrates standardized MPD operating procedures and MPD Engineering processes with a digital competence management system that provides real-time visibility of individual and crew-level competency coverage across multiple regions. Competencies are defined by role, MPD equipment configuration, and operational scope, enabling adaptation to regional and technological particularities while maintaining company-wide consistency. A service quality-driven competency matrix links operational performance, service quality events or near misses, and non-productive time learning to targeted competency development, assessment, and procedural updates. A formal competency assessor program was established to support competency validation, accelerate learning curves for new employees, and ensure the consistent application of standardized processes. The program effectiveness is reinforced through defined accountability, linked to employees' career development and compensation. The paper highlights key benefits observed, including the importance of crew-based competency assurance, where all required competencies for a given MPD operation are verified at the crew level, enabling safe and reliable execution even when individual competency profiles vary. Program limitations, sustainability considerations, and opportunities for future improvement are also discussed.
