Creation and Psychometric Validation of “Nursing Competencies Questionnaire on Older People’s Environmental Health (NCQ‐OPEH)” in Nurses and Nursing Students

Abstract
Aim To develop and psychometrically validate an instrument to assess the competencies (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) of nurses and nursing students regarding the effects of climate change on the health of older people. Methods Cross‐sectional descriptive study of questionnaire construction and validation developed in four phases: creation and elaboration of the initial items, content validation by an expert panel, pilot test, and psychometric validation. A tool was developed consisting of a knowledge questionnaire, a skills scale, and an attitude scale. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 708 individuals (210 nurses and 498 nursing students) between January and April 2024. Content validation was carried out by consulting a panel of 13 experts and a pilot test. Psychometric validation was carried out using Item Response Theory, specifically the Rasch model for the knowledge questionnaire and Andrich’s rating scale model for the skills and attitude scales. The STROBE checklist for cross‐sectional studies was followed. Results Reliability for the set of items and for individuals was excellent (0.99 and 0.90, respectively). Item separation index was above 2 in all three parts of the instrument, although somewhat more limited for people. Internal consistency was acceptable in the knowledge questionnaire (11 items, Cronbach’s α 0.68) and excellent in the skills (13 items, Cronbach’s α 0.91) and attitudes (11 items, Cronbach’s α 0.93) scales. Conclusion Nursing Competencies Questionnaire on Older People’s Environmental Health is a useful and reliable instrument for measuring knowledge, skills, and attitudes in nurses and nursing students.
Background: Evidence-based practice is an internationally accepted healthcare standard grounded in research utilisation. Validated instruments allow evaluation of nursing education against European Union competence requirements. Aim: To assess the psychometric properties of the Competence in Research Utilisation (CompRU) instrument among graduating nursing students using data from three European countries. Methods: Data were collected from graduating nursing students (n = 648) in Finland, Poland and Slovenia between 2012 and 2017. The CompRU instrument comprises a knowledge test and self-reported scales assessing skills and attitudes. Psychometric properties were assessed using Cronbach’s coefficient alpha, item-to-total correlation, Rasch analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Results: Internal consistency reliability was acceptable in all sections, despite two categories in the Knowledge section showing lower consistency. Rasch analysis supported the internal scale validity of the Knowledge section in terms of item infit and item separation. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the structure (Skills and Attitudes sections) and strength of the hypothetical model. Conclusion: The CompRU instrument is a promising tool for measuring nursing students’ research utilisation competence at graduation. Based on both classical and modern test theory approaches, the instrument demonstrates evidence of acceptable psychometric properties, although some items in the Knowledge section could benefit from future revisions.

Overall, the CTBLQ demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties and provides a standardized diagnostic instrument for identifying barriers to Team-Based Learning implementation and may support evidence-informed curriculum evaluation, educational planning, and future research in nursing education while contributing to the advancement of health workforce education through improved implementation of collaborative learning.

AIM
To develop the Professional Competency Scale (PCS) with validation evidence to assess professional competency in newly graduated nurses.
BACKGROUND
Newly graduated nurses' competency affects retention. However, there is a dearth of reliable and valid measures assessing professional competency.
DESIGN
A methodological study to develop and validate a scale.
METHODS
The PCS was developed following the nine procedural steps proposed by DeVellis and Thorpe. A total of 650 newly graduated nurses were recruited from hospitals of different levels across Taiwan. Structural validity was tested using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and criterion-related validity was also evaluated. Internal consistency reliability was assessed with Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω.
RESULTS
An initial 51-item questionnaire was developed. Exploratory factor analysis indicated the removal of 11 items, leaving 40 items across three factors of professional competency for newly graduated nurses: clinical care, soft skills and education and management (44% of variance explained). Confirmatory factor analysis results supported the three-factor structure with 40 items. Criterion-related validity was supported by positive relationships with work adaptation (r = 0.59-0.76; p < .001). The PCS demonstrated high internal consistency (α = 0.96; ω = 0.96).
CONCLUSION
A 40-item PCS for newly graduated nurses in Taiwan was developed and demonstrated good psychometric characteristics.
