Abstract

We study the central Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator $M_c$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for all $n\geq1$, with particular emphasis on the question of its injectivity. More precisely, we consider whether there exist two nonnegative functions $f,g\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^n)$ such that $\|f-g\|_1>0$ and $M_cf=M_cg$. Along the way, we obtain an elementary explicit formula for $M_c(\chi_U)$, where $U$ is the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We also derive an explicit formula, in terms of the incomplete beta function, for the $n$-dimensional volume of the intersection of two balls with arbitrary radii and centers.

Almost norming vertices for homogeneous polynomials on the cube

Let $m\geq1$ be fixed. We consider the space $\mathcal{P}_m(\mathbb{R}^n)$ of real $m$-homogeneous polynomials on $\mathbb{R}^n$, endowed with the standard Gaussian measure $\gamma_{m,n}$ associated with the Bombieri norm. We study how well the norm of a typical polynomial on the unit ball of $\ell_\infty^n$, namely th...

The Kakeya problem for codimension-two planes in $\mathbb{R}^n$

We study the $(n-2)$-plane Kakeya problem in $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq4$) subject to convex Wolff axioms. In other words, we study finite families of $\delta$-neighborhoods of $(n-2)$-plane segments ($\delta$-flakes) in $\mathbb{R}^n$, with the property that not too many of them can be contained inside a common convex set...

A Remark on H\"ormander Multipliers on Dunkl Hardy Spaces

Let $\mathcal R$ be a normalized root system in $\mathbb R^N$ with a nonnegative multiplicity function $k$, and let $\mathcal F$ be the associated Dunkl transform. We prove a H\"ormander multiplier theorem on the Hardy spaces $H^p_{\mathrm{Dunkl}}$, $0<p\le1$, defined by conical Littlewood--Paley square functions. Let...

Dimension-free estimates for the full discrete Euclidean ball maximal function

Let $M_t$ denote the normalized average over the lattice points in the Euclidean ball of radius $t$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. We prove that the full maximal operator $f\mapsto\sup_{t\geq0}\lvert M_t f\rvert$ is bounded on $\ell^p(\mathbb{Z}^d)$, for every $1<p\leq\infty$, with a constant independent of the dimension. In parti...

The strong $\ell^r$ spherical maximal function

Let $d\ge3$ and $2\le r<\infty$. We consider the strong maximal operator associated with Euclidean surface averages over the $\ell^r$ unit sphere and independent coordinate dilations. We prove that this operator is bounded on $L^p(\mathbb R^d)$ if and only if \[ p>\max\left\{\frac{d+1}{d-1},\frac{r}{d-1}\right\}. \] We...

Minimal hypersurfaces of finite $\delta$-index in $\mathbb R^4$ and $\mathbb R^5$

Let $X:M^n\to\mathbb R^{n+1}$ be a complete, connected, two-sided minimal immersion without boundary, where $n=3,4$. We prove that finite $\delta$-index, finite Morse index, and finite total curvature are equivalent for $\delta>((n-1)/n)^2$, without assumptions on properness, volume growth, or topology. The main estima...
