Abstract

This paper examines the impact of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on global asset management practices through a structured qualitative review of academic, regulatory, and industry literature published between 2018 and 2025. The report examines the impact of GDPR on data governance, compliance implementation, accountability frameworks, and overarching strategic responses in asset management and related financial services. The analysis delineates four interrelated thematic domains: modifications in data classification, retention, and deletion protocols; the increasing use of automation and digital monitoring in compliance processes; the enhancement of governance roles and accountability frameworks; and the strategic significance of privacy, transparency, and trust in increasingly digital investment environments. The findings indicate that GDPR has influenced asset management not merely as a legal compliance framework but also as a regulatory driver for stronger governance procedures and operational accountability. The literature examined reveals that compliance capacity varies across enterprises, with larger institutions typically better equipped to implement advanced governance and monitoring infrastructures than smaller organizations. The paper argues that the long-term significance of GDPR for asset management lies in its role in shaping more mature data governance, institutional trust, and regulatory resilience in data-intensive financial environments.
