Abstract

Pottery is a traditional occupation of the Pal community that has continued for generations. This study explores the livelihood strategies and socio-economic realities of women potters in Kagozi Para, Dhamrai Upazila, and Dhaka District. The livelihood conditions of this community are still difficult because there is little market demand for their products, support from the government and NGO is limited, and they face social and economic hardships. A qualitative research approach was adopted in this study, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observations. Twelve women were selected as respondents to understand their perceptions, roles in pottery work, economic situations, and challenges they face in this profession. The findings of the study show that pottery is the main source of income for these women, while men often engage in small businesses and work in factories for supplementary income. Women play a vital role in preparing, drying, and decorating the products. Although they face many problems in their profession, such as price increases of raw materials, insufficient market demand, and a lack of technology, the Pal community continues their traditional profession. To improve the livelihood conditions of women potters, government intervention and financial support are needed.
