A narration on the Style of Tagore's Plays: In Light of Aristotle's ‘Poetics’
Abstract
The subject — “A Discussion on the Formal Aspects of Rabindra Drama in Light of Aristotle’s ‘Poetics” —holds immense significance. Aristotle asserted that six specific elements are indispensable to the composition of a drama. In doing so, he conveyed a guiding principle regarding the methodology a playwright ought to adopt. Indeed, the vast majority of playwrights adhere to this convention; Rabindranath Tagore is no exception, for he, too, followed Aristotle’s precepts. However, he simultaneously cultivated a distinctive style of his own; rather than merely imitating Western dramatic forms, he infused his writing with a unique identity. Throughout his oeuvre, one consistently observes an evolving nature in Rabindra drama. In the present essay, the various formal aspects of Rabindra drama have been analysed through the lens of Aristotle’s ‘Poetics’.
