It is suggested that postoperative ICU admission criteria for patients with HFx should be reconsidered and the importance of optimizing ICU LOS in this patient group is emphasized.

Abstract

The global proportion of individuals aged ≥ 65 years is approximately 9%, and hip fractures (HFx) represent one of the most common and serious injuries in this population. This study retrospectively evaluated postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) admissions among patients with HFx, focusing on 30-day, 90-day, and 1-year mortality outcomes. This retrospective study included patients with HFx who were admitted to the ICU after surgery. Collected data included demographic characteristics (age and gender), admission diagnosis, comorbidities, ICU length of stay (LOS), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II scores, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, LOS, 30-day/ 90-day/1-year mortality, day of surgery, and the type anesthesia used. The mortality rate were 34.4% at 30-days 41.3% at 90 days and 24.1% at 1 years after surgery. Patients who died had significantly higher mean age, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II scores, ICU LOS, and total hospital stay. Our findings suggest that postoperative ICU admission criteria for patients with HFx should be reconsidered. The results also emphasize the importance of optimizing ICU LOS in this patient group. Further prospective studies are needed to clarify whether prolonged ICU stay contributes to increased mortality or reflects greater baseline severity.

Impact of Anesthesia Type on Mortality and Postoperative Intensive Care Unit Admission in Geriatric Hip Fracture Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Purpose: This retrospective cohort study primarily aims to assess the connection between the type of anesthesia used and in-hospital mortality among elderly patients with hip fractures. Additionally, it seeks to investigate mortality rates post-surgery, at 30 days, and at 1 year, categorized by the need for intensive c...

Incidence and risk factors of acute kidney injury after hip fracture surgery in oldest old patients

Objective: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a critical clinical event after hip fracture operation. Our study aimed to determine risk factors and the incidence of postoperative AKI among patients ≥ 85 years who underwent hip fracture surgery and were admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: The medical data of al...

Establishing Independent Predictors of Early Geriatric Hip Fracture Surgery

Lack of pretreatment with P2Y12 inhibitors, absence of hematological disorders, and absence of UTI were factors that influenced the timing of hip fracture surgery within 48 hours of admission.

A Prospective Study on the Incidence of Postoperative Complications in Hip Fracture Patients Receiving Postacute Care

Elderly hip fracture patients discharged home demonstrated functional recovery and complication rates comparable to those receiving intensive inpatient PAC, suggesting that with adequate home-based support, direct discharge is a clinically noninferior alternative to inpatient care.

Early complications after surgical stabilization of rib fractures: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND In recent years, interest in SSRF has increased due to the growing evidence of improved pain control, quality of life, and chest wall function. This study aimed to assess the incidence and the types of early complications (in-hospital and until 3 mo postoperatively) following SSRF and to develop a risk predi...
